HOCKEY REMINISCES -- Alumni of Lake Superior State University 1988 NCAA National Championship hockey team prove that pucks and golf balls do mix. The squad gathered on June 8 during this year's Lake State Golf Classic in Gaylord for a special celebration that honored the 20th anniversary of their championship feat. SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University’s 19th annual Greater Peninsula Orthopedics Lake State Classic golf tournament brought in more than $25,000 for Laker Club scholarship aid and operational support. The June 7 - 9 event at Gaylord’s Otsego Club attracted more than 170 alumni and friends of Lake Superior State.
A highlight was a special Sunday night reception for members of the 1988 NCAA National Championship Hockey team on the 20th anniversary of their memorable season. Speakers during the program included Jeff Jackson, an assistant coach with the '88 team; Kris Dunbar, currently LSSU’s director of athletics; Rodney Lowman, president of LSSU; and Jim Roque, currently Laker Hockey’s head coach and an assistant coach on the '88 team as well. Tom Coates, assistant athletic director served as master of ceremonies.
Jackson coached the Lakers from 1990 to 1996 with a record of 182-52-25. He was the head coach of the 1992 and 1994 Laker Hockey National Championship teams and has been the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Hockey Program since 2005. Notre Dame had a strong second half of the 2007-08 season, advancing to the NCAA finals.
Members of the 1988 team in attendance were David DiVita, Karl Johnston, Rene Chapdelaine, Tim Harris, Mike DeCarle, Jeff Napierala, Anthony Palumbo, Doug Laprade, Bruce Hoffort along with staff members, Gil Some, Jackson and Roque.
Forty-four teams vied for first-and second-place tournament honors during Monday's golf scramble on the Otsego Club’s Tribute and Classic courses.
Taking first place with a score of 57, in Flight A on the Tribute Course were Bruce Hoffort, Doug Laprade, David Divita and Jeff Napierala. Second place Flight A, also on the Tribute, were the threesome of Rene Chapdelaine, Mike DeCarle and Eileen Stepp with a 60.
In Flight B on the Tribute, Tony Bosbous, Jim Cooper, Gary McClellan, Dr. Steve Perry and Gil Somes took first-place honors with a score of 58, while the team of Bob Downs, Richard Nebel, Mike Prusi and Kel Smyth placed second scoring a 62.
Special event winners on the Tribute were Craig Cooper, Longest Drive and Jim Cooper for longest putt.
On the Classic Course, Darrin Madeley and Bill Thompson combined for first place scoring a 60 in Flight A, while the team of Randy Anderson, Jeff Behling, Keith Neve and Dave Weber were second place with a 65.
With a score of 66, the Flight B, first-place team was Dan Failla, Rodney Lang, Ron Rosko and Jeff Wallace on the Classic Course. The foursome of Gary Benjamin, Mike Roberge, Ted Tuma and Jeff Welcher carded a 69 for second place.
Special event winners on the Classic Course were Men’s Longest Drive Keith Neve and Longest Putt was Darrin Madeley. Luanne Webb had the Women’s Longest Drive and Jamie Pewinski, longest putt.
Senior-Champions were the team of Neal Godby, Dave Freeborn, Jerry MacGregor and Harry Pike. While the top Women’s team was the squad of Taira Roth, Kris Dunbar, Jamie Pewinski and Stacey Swanson.
Laker Hockey Alumnus Tim Hanley ’95 provided his tee shot services as an additional fundraiser at the event.
A silent auction of unique donated items was held in conjunction with other tournament activities. The Silent Auction committee was chaired by Tony Bosbous, with Tom Coates, Gil Somes and Virginia Zinser serving as committee members. Laker Alumnus, Don Winsley was auctioneer as some items were moved into a live auction.
