Peter Pietrangelo of Sault Ste. Marie presented a research paper at the 2010 John Burroughs Nature Writing Conference and Seminar held during the summer at the State University of New York in Oneonta. The conference, "Old Lessons for a New Millennium: Nature Writing and Environmentalism in the 21st Century," focused on the work of writers who contributed to the early conservation movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the work of contemporary writers who are exerting an influence on the development of early 21st century environmentalism. Campus Archaeology

LSSU Archaeology

This growing field of archaeological research used to help connect students with the campus they live, study, and grow up within. Campus archaeology projects are fully interactive classrooms that help educate students not only about archaeology but they ways through which our society changes. Participants are afforded a unique perspective regarding their place within the history of any one campus. Campus archaeology at LSSU is distinguished from similar programs elsewhere because LSSU’s campus was initially constructed as a turn of the century military fort.

HIST 300: Great Lakes Archaeological Field School (Summer 2010, 6 credits)

HIST 300 is a fun, exciting new way to introduce LSSU students to the discipline of archaeology. During the semester you will learn the methods and techniques employed by archaeologists while participating in the excavation of archaeological sites in the Great Lakes region. Students will have a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the recovery and analysis of historical artifacts and learn how archaeology contributes to our knowledge of the past. During the first five weeks of the course students will be involved in a campus archaeology project at LSSU. The goal of this project is to evaluate archaeological resources present on campus and students will have an opportunity to develop specific archaeological field and lab skills including survey and mapping techniques, site excavation methodology, artifact identification, and field and lab processing protocols.

Inland SeasThe final week of the semester we will be aboard the Inland Seas from June 14th - 17th. The Inland Seas is a 77’ two-masted schooner and is part of a LSSU pilot program designed to incorporate research on the Great Lakes directly into the university’s curriculum. Current plans are to use our time aboard the Inland Seas to visit important archaeological sites within the Straits of Mackinaw area and to engage in test excavations at the St. Helena Island lighthouse, which is accessible only by ship.

Special Hours For Final Week: Monday - Thursday 8:00am - 3:00 pm, 1st summer session. *June 14th-17th will require a continuous stay aboard the Inland Seas.

Cost: Approximately $2650 USD. Cost includes 6 credits of tuition and a $600 course fee, which covers the cost of 4 days aboard the Inland Seas including transportation, food, and lodging. Students are required to participate in both portions of the course. *Tuition costs may be higher for out-of-state students.

I came to LSSU as a liberal arts major. I was planning to switch my major to marketing, and then I took Communication 101. I loved the subject matter and the professor was extremely knowledgeable and inspiring. I reviewed the communication courses and requirements and decided that it was definitely the major for me. I was still interested in marketing so I decided to make it my minor. [ more ]
