Alum Success

Mark Reese

“The material covered in LSSU's engineering program provided me a solid foundation for graduate studies. The systematic approach and communication skills needed to tackle engineering projects were taught and then practiced over and over again. In particular I appreciate the many hours spent by the faculty to develop oral presentation skills in each student. As a graduate student now, these skills have proven to be highly beneficial and, to my surprise, obviously not taught to the same extent at many other universities.”

Welcome

Mathematics

If you are pursuing a college degree in mathematics, you are well on your way to one of the best jobs in America today. Mathematician, actuary, and statistician rank as the top three occupations in the country, according to an article published in Wall Street Journal’s Career Journal.

“This is great news for our math majors,” says Lake Superior State University professor Thomas Boger, who heads up the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. “Over the years, our mathematics alumni have shared their success stories with us. This study further confirms that we are preparing students for satisfying careers.”

Computer Science

Career projection outlooks have stated that computer networking professionals will be in high demand for many years to come. Strangely enough, there are very few U.S. universities and colleges that offer a 4-year degree in computer networking, especially one that provides students with hands-on experience with a variety of hardware and software.

"In addition to the computer networking degree, employers in the networking field today are looking for industry certifications, hands-on training, and work experience," says Mark Terwilliger, associate professor in computer science. "The LSSU Computer Networking degree provides all of those things."

Many of the courses in the computer networking curriculum help prepare students for the industry-standard certifications that employers are looking for. These include certifications such as Cisco, CompTIA, Novell, and Microsoft. The degree also requires a full year internship or co-operative as a capstone experience.

Recent graduates from the program have been finding jobs in a variety of settings. The degree is intended to prepare students for work as a network administrator, web analyst/designer/programmer, system administrator, or help desk/support specialist.

"The opportunity at LSSU to do research is amazing. This past summer I motored through coves and islands with Prof. Garvon surveying water birds for the affects of pollution. I spent the other part of my summer on the shore of Lake Superior monitoring nests of the endangered Piping Plover."
