Alum Success

Mark Reese

“The material covered in LSSU's engineering program provided me a solid foundation for graduate studies. The systematic approach and communication skills needed to tackle engineering projects were taught and then practiced over and over again. In particular I appreciate the many hours spent by the faculty to develop oral presentation skills in each student. As a graduate student now, these skills have proven to be highly beneficial and, to my surprise, obviously not taught to the same extent at many other universities.”

About Jess Miller...

Jess Miller has been working in Admissions at LSSU since 2004, and he has been working with high school and college students as both a counselor and a teacher for over thirty years.  Originally from San Francisco, California, he earned his BA in Economics and his MA in Counseling from Michigan State University.  Jess eventually became an NCC (National Certified Counselor) and an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).  Jess spent seven years working for the US Department of Defense school system near London, England.  For the majority of his career, he has worked in Northern Michigan, where he was most recently a counselor at Cheboygan Area High School.

Jess is married and has two grown sons.  His wife, Pam, is an active registered nurse and a successful LSSU graduate of the BSN program.  They make their home on Burt Lake, near Indian River, and spend much of their spare time at their Lake Superior cottage, just north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

When Jess comes to visit your high school, you will probably see a mountain bike strapped to the rear of his car.   When Jess isn’t meeting with students, you will generally find him on the mountain-biking trails in the fall and on the ski slopes in the winter.  Jess also likes to spend his time sea-kayaking on Lake Superior or hiking the trails just north of Sault Ste. Marie in Canada.  So after discussing all the academic opportunities at LSSU, don’t forget to ask Jess about all the outdoor recreational advantages as well.
