PLATO® Web Learning Network

PLATO® Learning

PLATO® is an award-winning computer-based curriculum tool that allows motivated students to review previous material or learn new materials . . .

  • at their own pace,
  • on their own schedules,
  • in any location where they have internet access 1 (on or off campus).

PLATO® is designed to provide students with an opportunity to advance through curriculum content that may save time and money by reducing the number of courses required for more advanced LSSU coursework. The level students attain depends on their motivation to learn, their self-discipline, and their willingness to ask for help when they need it.

How does it work?

Some PLATO® curriculums are set up to match the content of courses at LSSU, such as MA 081-083, MA 084-086 and MA 102, so students work toward preparing themselves for testing into higher level courses.

PLATO® curriculums can help students save tuition by preparing them for university classes and exams.

Not all PLATO® curriculums have been reviewed and matched to current LSSU courses. These curriculums are offered as tutorials to improve the students’ skills as they prepare to take LSSU courses.

How To Sign Up?

  1. First, take our quick online learning quiz to see if online learning is appropriate for you..
  2. Then fill in the form to the right and on front, then bring or mail it to the PLATO® Coordinator (address is on back). You will need to arrange a brief appointment for an orientation session with the Coordinator

After orientation, you will receive the login information (in person or by email) that will allow access to the chosen curriculum for a six month period
  3. The cost per course curriculum is $50. Payment is arranged through the PLATO® Coordinator or the Student Services Counter in the Fletcher Center.
  4. You may work at your own pace to complete the curriculum during your six months of access. You can ask the PLATO® Coordinator about exams that give course credit at LSSU.

More Services through PLATO®

PLATO® Math Program and PLATO® Reading Program
The PLATO® Math and PLATO® Reading programs offer students a low-cost instructional alternative to LSSU's preparatory math and reading courses. Students who enroll in either program pay $50 per semester for unlimited access to the content equivalent to LSSU's preparatory math or reading courses. Once enrolled, the students work independently at mastering the PLATO® content to prepare for the departmental exams they must pass to be eligible for freshmen-level reading and math courses, and other content area courses that require either MA086 and/or SA091 as prerequisites. Students also have access to free math tutoring available through the Learning Center.

  • PLATO® Math covers the content of LSSU's MA 081 to MA 086 one-credit math module courses, allowing students to independently prepare for the department's module tests. Once students pass the module tests, they are eligible to move on to the next level of math.
  • PLATO® Reading provides an alternative to LSSU's SA090 and SA091 three-credit reading courses, allowing students to independently prepare for the reading program's proficiency test.

Course Assignments and Tutorials
Professors across the disciplines create modules that allow students to "refresh" their knowledge of specific content required for success in a given course, or serve as assignments for a particular course.

Preparation for National Tests
Program administrators select PLATO® content to create modules that assist students in preparing for national tests required for career certification, admissions to schools and programs, etc. LSSU currently has a PLATO® module set up for teacher education students preparing for the MTTC exam.
