brain that afflict more than one per cent of the population.
Fighting a battle between personality and perception, chronic
schizophreniacs face the loss of those mental processes that are
necessary for everyday functioning in society. This hour
examines some of the more severe afflictions, including that of a
former policeman who presents doctors with a textbook case of
the illness. the illness. Gerald is delusional, suffers from marked disturbances of mood,
and his behavior and thinking are disordered. He is among the
one-third of schizophreniacs who show little or no progress
after treatment, and-unless mayor breakthroughs occur-he will
probably spend most of his life institutionalized.;;Scientists
are still unsure what causes Gerald's illness, though they
hypothesize that biochemical, genetic and even environmental
"LSSU is a relatively small school and I believe for this reason I have received a better education. The close atmosphere as opposed to a larger university has provided me with an opportunity to become acquainted with my professors. The professors therefore have an opportunity to assist with problems fairly easily, especially in upper level classes. The classes are fairly small also which provides one on one conversations which is very helpful."
