Government control & regulation in the name of protecting the consumer has
been growing at an explosive pace. Dozens of new agencies have been
established, thousands upon thousands of regulations have been issued, &
billions & billions of dollars have been spent. Yet the end effect is not
to help the consumer but to hurt him. The end effect is rather to protect
special groups of producers or to add to the power & importance of
bureaucratic organizations. This has been the story since the time the
first government agency in the United States was established supposedly to
protect the protection for the consumer is the availability of the widest
range of alternative supplies through free market competition.
