Joshua Chamberlain was trained as a theology professor, not as a military
man. As the winds of the Civil War brewed, Bowdoin College offered him a
two-year sabbatical to study in Europe.
Chamberlain took the sabbatical, but instead of using it for academic
purposes, he used it to serve this country.
