AGE OF THE HEROS (DVD FORMAT)
Some 3000 years ago, according to Homer's "Iliad," the "most beautiful
woman in the world" was kidnapped, setting off a 10-year war that would end
only when a hollow wooden horse filled with Greed soldiers was hauled
inside the gates of the city on Troy. Fact or fiction? That's the subject
of this compelling six-part probe. Wearing the hats of historian,
archaeologist, detective and storyteller, British journalist Michael Wood
journeys to supposed Trojan War sites in Greece and Turkey and delves into
the complex literary and historical records in an effort to separate the
myths from the facts. In part 1, Wood recounts the story of one of the
first "who searched before," an enigmatic German named Heinrich Schliemann
(1822-90). Known to many as " the father of archaeology," Schliemann was
the first to unearth what were believed to be ruins or Troy, in the 1870's.

"The opportunity at LSSU to do research is amazing. This past summer I motored through coves and islands with Prof. Garvon surveying water birds for the affects of pollution. I spent the other part of my summer on the shore of Lake Superior monitoring nests of the endangered Piping Plover."
