On May 13, 1982, Braniff International's "flying colors" never left the
ground. Chairman Howard D. Putnam had announced at 12:01 am that Braniff was
bankrupt. Fifty-nine jets sat motionless and some 10,000 employees had no

world that Braniff had no more cash. After 54 years of flying, Braniff
would cease operations and attempt to reorganize. American Airlines picked
up most of Braniff's business; within two weeks, American had substantially
raised its rates.
