Bidding for potentially oil-rich offshore land tracts is a high risk game,
even for the giant oil companies. Half an oil company's liquid assets can be
exposed in bidding, which can have serious repercussions--8 of 9 wells
drilled turn out to be dry. Yet companies are willing to take such risks
since an estimated one-third of the undiscovered oil reserves are offshore.
Enterprise follows the "bidding" team at Sun Exploration & Production
Company as it prepares for the federal government auction of oil tracts off
the coast of southern California.
