School of Biological Science
Mission and Vision Statement
The LSSU School of Biological Sciences provides in-depth learning experiences in a challenging
integrated curriculum. Our teaching is designed to help students prepare themselves for careers as
scientists, technicians, educators and other professionals; for leadership in their communities; and
as informed citizens who can make responsible decisions regarding biological issues.
Our approach to achieve this is to:
- Provide students hands-on/real-world experiences with a sound conceptual basis.
- Foster close student faculty collaboration throughout the curriculum
- Provide students the opportunity to demonstrate academic achievement with a
substantive, independent, capstone senior project.
- Provide a supportive academic and co-curricular environment that encourages
students and faculty to excel.
- Incorporate current knowledge across the biological sciences into the curriculum
- Value faculty activities in their personal and professional communities through which
students can gain experience in their field and through which faculty can help build
the base of knowledge and best practices in their fields.
Goals:
- Prepare students for careers in the biological sciences and admission into graduate
and professional schools.
- Students will demonstrate foundational knowledge in the biological sciences.
- Students will communicate effectively, demonstrating analytic, critical thinking, and
problem solving skills.
- Provide students with hands on skills via indoor and outdoor laboratory exercises using
modern equipment and approaches culminating in an applied, basic, or service
learning senior thesis experience.
