J2SE Runtime Environment 6.0 Update 7 is needed by Blackboard, all other Java versions need to be uninstalled
Java plugins allows you to view Java applets through your web browser.
Checking Java for optimal performance involves the following steps:
- Checking the version of Java installed on your machine
- Removing unneeded versions of Java from your machine
- Installing the correct version of Java
- Disable update Java automatically option through Control Panel

Click on Start
Click on Control Panel
Select the Add Remove Programs icon
Look for the Java icon (coffee cup) as shown below:
J2SE Runtime Environment 6.0 Update 7 is needed by Blackboard, all other Java versions need to be uninstalled.
For directions on removing the unneeded versions of Java please refer to the section “Removing unneeded versions of Java from your machine.”
Click Start, Control Panel
Double-click Add Remove Programs icon, as shown below:
From the Add/Remove Programs screen, look for the Java icon (coffee cup) on the listing. Notice there are two versions of Java installed in the screenshot below. Java version 5 update 7 and Java version 6 update 11.
The Blackboard system requires the installation of Java 6 update 7 and no other versions of Java to be installed on the computer. Hence, for optimal performance it recommends that all other versions of Java be uninstalled.
Remove Java (TM) 6 Update 11
Do not remove J2SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 7, as this is needed by the system.
Click on Java (TM) 6 Update 11, and select the Remove button, as shown below:
If there are other versions of Java listed on the Add Remove Programs window, remove all of them except J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7.
3. Installing the correct version of Java

(Note: FireFox users might have to Save the file to the computer. Then, double-click on the file name to Run it.)
Select Finish from the following screen
After logging in to the Blackboard Learning System, you will be prompted to accept a Java Security Certificate. Select Run, and the check box Always trust content from this publisher.
Click on Start, Control Panel
Double-click the Java icon as shown below:
Click on the Update tab
Click to Uncheck the “Check for Updates Automatically” box
Click OK from the above screen.
Click the button Never Check
Click OK from the screen below:
At the top of the Firefox windowOn the menu bar, click on the ToolsFirefoxEdit menu, and select Options...Preferences....
In the OptionsPreferences window, select the Content panel.
To change advanced settings, click Advanced.
- Click OK to close the Options windowClick Close to close the Preferences windowClose the Preferences window.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Security tab.
Click the Internet zone.
If you do not have to customize your Internet security settings, click Default Level. Then do step 4
If you have to customize your Internet security settings, follow these steps:
a. Click Custom Level.
b. In the Security Settings – Internet Zone dialog box, click Enable for Active Scripting in the Scripting section.
Click the Back button to return to the previous page, and then click the Refresh button to run scripts.
