The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invite people of all ages to come explore the Soo Locks and avail themselves the rare opportunity to walk across the Lock walls. These walls make it possible for freighters to traverse the 21-foot drop between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. To gain a real understanding of how this engineering marvel works only a visit will do.
The Soo Locks are located on West Portage Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie, MI adjacent to downtown shopping, restaurants and accommodations. The park and all facilities are open free to the public and parking is located on Portage Avenue.
In addition to the celebration of Soo Locks Engineer’s Day, Cloverland Electric Cooperative will host its annual hydroelectric plant open house on Friday June 28, 2013. Join us for a day of fun activities for the whole family. Self-guided tours will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The historic hydroelectric plant is over 110 years old and continues to provide power to residents in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. The facility is located along the St. Marys River and Portage Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
