Faculty Information

Distance education courses are recorded individually onto DVDs, in the IATV room. These DVDs are then sent to each enrolled student.

When the university asks a faculty member to make their classes available to the students who are enrolled in their course through Distance Education the following points are important:

  1. Make an appointment with Chuck Gustafson (X2629) to learn the logistics for using the IATV room. (We do not have people sit in the room during the recording of your class.)
  2. At least one week ahead of the course being taught obtain a list of the distance education students. You determine distance education students by the section number they enrolled in.
For instance: CJ245-79T (79T designates a tape delay student enrolled in the Petoskey Regional Center attending North Central Michigan Community College). CJ245-89T is Escanaba Regional Center-Bay de Noc Community College. CJ245-45T is Lansing Regional Center-Lansing Community College. CJ245-55T is our Ontario Provincial Police Program.
  3. Email your distance education students welcoming them to your class. Provide the title, author and ISBN number for the required book (s). Students purchase their book (s) from the Campus Shoppe www.lssu.bkstore.com or other suppliers of their choice. Also inform them that a DVD player is required for this class and attach your syllabus to the email.
Optional: Create a chat session on WebCT (contact Sara Devaprasad X6231 & Beth Hronek X2651) at the beginning of the semester that the course is offered.

Homework

If class requires homework email the students the format by which you want it to be returned. For instance: attachment to the Professor or mailed in.

Note: Tape delayed classes are delayed 1-2 weeks. The time line for testing and grading will be 1-2 weeks behind your live class.

Testing

The Instructor determines by which of the following options he/she wants to handle the tests.

  • If live testing is required contact the Regional Directors at that site at the start of the semester and advise students of arrangements made.
    • Escanaba: Kristen Kendrick 786-5802 X1261
    • Petoskey: Becky Scheelk 231-348-6623
    • OPP: Laurine Kelly X2802
  • Send test by email.
  • Create test on WebCT (contact Sara Devaprasad X6231 & Beth Hronek X2651).
  • Mail the test to the students.
  • Create a schedule when distance education students should take the test since they are on a different time frame from the live class.

Support for Faculty

Support provided by Laurine Kelly includes but is not limited to the following:

  • After AV delivers the DVDs of your course I mail them out once a week on Friday unless other arrangements have been made with me ahead of time.
  • I email the distance education students in a class to inform the students each week of the day and date the DVDs were mailed. The first time I email the students I request a confirmation back so I know they are participating on-line. Attached to the email is a handout entitled Success Strategies (The handout is included in your packet). This handout informs the student what their responsibilities are regarding the DVDs.
  • If a student receives a defective DVD I request another one and mail it out ASAP.
  • I am the liaison with the students and the DVDs.

If you have any questions regarding this program please call me at 906-635-2802. I am located in LBR 102. Although I have been working with this tape delayed program for over 4 years I might have overlooked some questions that you may have. Please feel free to ask these questions at this time or as they may arise in the future. By us working together we can continue to make Distance Education a success.
