Lake Superior State University is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan following along the St. Mary's River. Our small town of 13,000 is just a short drive across the International Bridge from our sister city, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in Canada, population 68,000.

Senior Projects...more than just theory

Computer engineering student, ManarAll engineering students are required to participate in a senior project sequence. Whether you choose to participate in a team on an industrial or research project, or as an individual at a cooperative work site, you will grow both professionally and personally as you work with professionals in the field.

During a typical senior project, you'll develop your technical and communication skills, manage budgets, and work with practicing engineers. The senior project experience is designed to give you the tools you need to be prepared for "real life" and allow you to be successful in your career. Choose from one three senior year experiences: Industrial, Research or Cooperative Education.

  • INDUSTRIAL These projects can be external or internal in nature. Student teams have a faculty advisor and an industrial customer representative.They are faced with a host of engineering problem-solving, analysis, development, modeling, design review, programming, and fabrication issues. Additionally, participants deal with aspects of being a team of diverse individuals from varying areas of engineering including communication, purchasing and budgets, documentation, time management, and interpersonal skills. Upon completion of the year, the teams present their work to their industrial customers for final approval.
  • RESEARCH: The research sequence is frequently chosen by those students who wish to pursue post-graduate degrees. Teams work sided-by-side with a professor on a guided research project. Some projects may come from an industrial background such as robotic simulation software packages that have been reviewed for companies such as DELMIA.
    Team R2D2 with robotParticipants prepare research proposals and grants, as well as publishing the team's findings in a format suited for professional conferences and presentations. Some industrial projects have a research component to determine feasibility. Once a study has been completed, the following year another team will take on the project and develop a functional prototype for the customer. These multi-year projects change course and take on new dimensions with each successive year.
  • COOPERATIVE: Participants in this style of senior experience are those who have previously spent at least a semester in a cooperative education environment. Typically, students work on-site during the spring or summer with a selected company on a personally-proposed and developed project. The following fall, co-op students join a first-semester industrial senior project team to gain team-related skills and experience.

We have had a 100% success rate of students entering the workforce or being accepted to graduate school. Various companies visit our campus specifically looking for LSSU graduates. You'll find out alumni at companies including Kawasaki, ABB, Boeing, JR Automation, Essar Algoma Steel, Continental Automotive, Ford, Chrysler, Tenaris Tubes, Pacific Union, John Deere, and Applied Manufacturing Technologies.

LSSU graduates have received their post-graduate degrees from universities such as Purdue, Notre Dame, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Michigan Technological University, Old Dominion, University of Texas at Arlington, and Florida Atlantic Universtiy.

Reflective Writing in organic chemistry

Poor writing skills are negatively affecting both college readiness and communication in the workplace. Only 49.5% of students were deemed proficient writers on the 2011 Michigan Merit Exam, leading many educators to push for incorporation of writing into every classroom. To test if writing is an effective instructional strategy, this study integrated reflective writing into chemistry supplemental instruction and found a significant increase in studentsí performances on tests and quizzes.
