NS 119 FINAL LAB EXERCISE NEBULAE Charles Messier created a list of fuzzy objects and gave them the Latin name of Nebulae (clouds). There are three types of nebulae: dark nebulae (where dense clouds of solid grains absorb the surrounding starlight), bright nebulae (dense clouds in the region of hot young stars that illuminate them), and planetary nebulae (a large shell of expanding gas that has been ejected from a central star approaching its final, white-dwarf stage). The green color of planetary nebulae reminded Herschel of the planet Uranus--hence he named them planetary nebulae). Using the Internet (and other sources) select eight nebulae of your choice - however you can use no more than two nebulae per constellation. Using a wordprocessor, perform the following eight tasks per chosen nebulae: 1 Identify the nebula by its common name. 2. Identify the nebula by its Messier of other standard classification. 3. Briefly describe the nebula (color, chemical composition, energy type, etc.). 4. List the constellation it is in and its location within the constellation (i.e., near a star, etc.). 5. Find a picture of the nebula on the Internet and copy the picture into your document. You MUST use a computer's Acopy and paste@ function for this activity. 6. List the Internet address where you found the picture. 7. List who took the picture and when it was taken. 8. Indicate if the nebulae is dark, bright, or planetary.
