March 13, 2020 - STRONG SHOWING AT MI AMERICAN FISHERIES SOCIETY MEETING!
With nearly 15 students and 20+ alumni present, LSSU senior, Nicole Vellequette (F&W Management) and Junior Evan Andrus (F& W Management) took home the Best Student Poster and Runner-up awards. DOCUMENTARY AIRS ON PBS FEATURING GREAT LAKES COASTAL WETLANDS MONITORING PROGRAM
The documentary "Linking Land and Lakes" has aired across the United States and features university research crews across the Great Lakes, including our own at LSSU! The film recently was awarded an Emmy in the Photographer Non-news category--not many students get to say they worked on an emmy-winning program! November 9, 2019 - LET THE DIGGING BEGIN!
Construction of LSSU's Richard and Theresa Barch Center for Freshwater Research and Education is under way! The land is part of the city's former Alford Park, which was a historical industrial site and is now a current brownfield redevelopment site that is sure to shape the future of Sault Sainte Marie's riverfront. April 17, 2017 - F&W UNDERGRAD WINS STATE-WIDE AWARD!
Fisheries & Wildlife undergraduate, Courtney Steinmetz, was selected as the recipient of the Best Student Poster Award at the Michigan American Fisheries Society meeting this spring. Courtney's senior research discussed the potential effects of ingesting microplastics on Atlantic salmon growth. Read more here. January 11, 2017 - HALF-MILLION DOLLAR GIFT LAUNCHES CENTER FOR FRESHWATER RESEARCH AND EDUCATION (CFRE) CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Richard and Theresa Barch of Ann Arbor, Mich., presented LSSU with a half-million dollar gift towards the transformation of LSSU's Aquatic Research Laboratory into the Center for Freshwater Research and Education. The $11.8 million project, slated for completion in 2021, will include an improved hatchery facility, expanded research and classroom space, state-of-the-art research and fish disease testing labs, a community visitor’s center and K-12 discovery area, and offices for regional partners. Sept. 20, 2015- First discovery of Didymo (aka rock snot), a nuisance algae, in Michigan waters (St. Marys River) confirmed by LSSU Aquatic Research Lab and Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Read more here and in the MDEQ press release.
