Act 224,
1970
Use of Dogs
and Cats for Research essentially incorporates the standards of the Federal
Animal Welfare Act into state regulations. The state law applies only to dogs
and cats
and inspection responsibility is assigned to the Michigan Department of Agriculture. Several
cities and counties in Michigan have adopted ordinances or policies permitting
the release of unclaimed and unwanted dogs and cats to approved scientific
institutions for use in research and education.
