Dr. Lance Rivers (Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Southern Illinois University Carbondale) is Associate Professor of English at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. His areas of interest include the Rhetoric of Science, Post-Colonial Theory, Modern American Literature (especially writers of the Algonquin Round Table), and the Rhetoric of non-skeptical approaches to the paranormal and the pseudo-sciences. Dr. Rivers has presented papers at the Conference of College Composition and Communication on such diverse topics as the relationship between Magic and Composition, Chaos Theory and the Composing Dynamic, Visual Rhetoric, and the use of computers to assess writing ; at the Council of Writing Program Administrators on ways to make composition courses more financially viable; and at the African Literature Association on Setian Imagery in Aimé Césaire's, And the Dogs Were Silent. Recently, he was invited by the editors of Skeptic magazine to write an article on the history of alien abduction for the Skeptic's Encyclopedia of Pseudoscience (December 2002). In 1996, Dr. Rivers was named Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year in English at SIUC, and was nominated for the University Core Curriculum teaching award. In 1999, he was named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2000, and recently he was named to Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2004. Currently, he is working on developing a taxonomy for Alien Abduction Narratives, a book length project. He chairs the Writing Studies Committee at LSSU, and is faculty advisor for the Gamer's Group. In his spare time (HA!) he enjoys watercolor painting; photography; playing The Sims; hiking; prowling around deserted graveyards late at night; and curling up with a good book, a cup of espresso, and his two cats: Tallulah Bankhead ("The Divine Miss T") and Clark Gable ("Gabezilla").
