Personal
I have always been interested in paleontology! As a young person growing up in Chicago, I was active in local rock and mineral groups, particularly when field trips were scheduled out of town to fossil collecting sites in Illinois. Ultimately I became interested in conodonts, microscopic hard part remains of a vertebrate animal that lived in the Paleozoic Era, because they are very useful for doing all kinds of geology. For example, we use conodonts to compare rocks to each other in terms of time (correlation) and for interpreting depositional settings of the rocks from which we extract them. I have a complete conodont lab set up at Lake State, one of the very few in the midwest, and many students work with me on a daily basis. It's a great opportunity to publish some meaningful research as an undergraduate; most of the following list of papers and abstracts are co-authored by Lake State geology majors. You can take advantage of this opportunity while you are a student in our geology program. I can teach you what you need to know as early as your freshman year! Teaching
