Fall 2001 Courses:
- Geology 111 - Physical Geology I
Research
Dr. Kelso and
undergraduate student Chris Love are currently measuring and
analyzing magnetics data for a collaborative National Science
Foundation proposal with researchers from Minnesota, North
Carolina and France. We are undertaking an integrated study of
the evolution of the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. This
preliminary work is the basis of Chris's senior project.
Dr. Kelso and an undergraduate student, Mark Halverson,
collected samples from the Kapuskasing Structural Zone northeast
of Chapleau, Ont. for a structural/paleomagnetic/rock magnetic
study.
Samples were collected by Dr.
Brown and Kurt Johnston (Baylor University) in New Mexico
for a collaborative biostratigraphic/magnetostratigraphic
project. Dr. Kelso is currently working on initial
magnetic measurements, and analyses are underway.
Dr. Kelso and undergraduate student Len Payne, are
continuing experimental studies on the magnetic properties of
previously collected oceanic crustal and mantle samples. These
samples were collected by Dr. Kelso while aboard the
international scientific research vessel The JOIDES. These
samples are in some cases unlike any rock previously collected
anywhere in the world. Thus, they are providing new insights into
how oceans and oceanic crust forms and changes with time.
