Written Pledges to Give
Anonymous donors lead the way in The Campaign for Lake State
An anonymous donor has earmarked a $1 million gift for the fine and performing arts center, providing a tremendous boost to The Campaign for Lake State.
Publicly announced last July, the campaign includes several elements, not the least of which is the $15 million arts complex. Construction will begin in the spring.
This gift is an exceptional commitment to the region and to our students, said Robert Arbuckle, LSSU president. The leadership exhibited by this generous investment can not be overstated. We are deeply appreciative of their confidence in this project and in our University.
A second anonymous donor has generously donated more than $400,000 in Native American artwork that will be featured in the new fine arts facility. This person also pledged $350,000 for the construction of the center and for the permanent display and maintenance of the artwork collection, which will further enhance the Native American theme of the building.
The collection is truly impressive and may well be one of the finest of its kind anywhere,” said Arbuckle. “One of our goals is to recognize and honor the Native roots of this region. This collection is a giant step in that direction.” That's not the end of the major donations that have come in from anonymous donors. A Michigan foundation that chooses to remain anonymous has delivered a $100,000 gift to support the fine arts building. A spokesperson for the foundation said she hopes the gift “…will, in some small measure, assist the University in carrying forward its very worthy purposes.
A fourth anonymous donation of $50,000 in support of the fine arts building brings the campaign total to $3.5 toward construction of the center. The University must raise $7.3 million as its share of the match of state dollars for the building.
The Campaign for Lake State has raised $7,548,189 as of November 2001, reaching 68.6 percent of its overall campaign goal of $11 million. The five-year campaign is to be completed in December 2004.
These gifts were obviously not for personal recognition, but to enhance the lives of others,” said Walter North, chair of the LSSU Foundation. “The impact of these gifts is beyond measure, and the vision of the donors even more so. Never in the history of this institution have we been presented with such generous resources.” LSSU officially announced the public phase of The Campaign for Lake State at the July 23 groundbreaking for the fine and performing arts center. At that time, Arbuckle announced that more than half of the campaign goal had already been raised.
These extraordinary gifts exude confidence in the LSSU Foundation's ability to structure and manage the resources. People don't entrust these kinds of gifts to an institution unless they feel very secure and comfortable. We are complimented by this and pledge our efforts toward being good, committed stewards,” Arbuckle said.
