Business & Economics Scholarships

Central Savings Bank Scholarship Central Savings BankIn 1990, Central Savings Bank established its scholarship to assist LSSU students who are majoring in finance and economics and who are pursuing a career in banking. The scholarship recipient must reside in the Eastern U.P. or the Algoma District of Ontario and has earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The goal of this program is to provide talented local students with an opportunity to work and stay within the community. The scholarship recipient is selected by a committee composed of three faculty members of the School of Business, a CSB representative and a representative from city government. College of Business & Economics/Lambda Scholarship LSSUThis scholarship was created by contributions from alumni of the College of Business and Lambda Sigma Beta Fraternity and spearheaded by Dr. Madan Saluja, professor of business at LSSU. This endowment is awarded to students who have attained junior or senior status in the business program, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and who have demonstrated campus/community leadership and dedication in working in the business profession.

Frank Fazi Scholarship Frank FaziThis scholarship was established in honor of Frank Fazi, a longtime supporter to the Sault area community and to Lake Superior State University. Frank has played an active role in many organizations and projects for the betterment of the community. He was also an outstanding athlete, playing for the Michigan Tech-Sault Branch Hornet's basketball team. He was inducted into the LSSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman from an Eastern U.P. high school. The student must demonstrate academic excellence and major in business and economics.

William R. Gregory Trust Fund William R. GregoryThis scholarship was established in honor of William R. Gregory, former president of Edison Sault Electric Company. He has served as a member of the LSSU Board of Trustees and the LSSU Foundation Board. He received LSSU's Distinguished Citizen Award in 1986. Former LSSU President Robert Arbuckle once stated, "Bill Gregory has actively supported the University with his talent and treasure for over 25 years. No one in this region is more devoted to Lake State." Successful candidates must be a junior majoring in engineering, mathematics, business, biology or fisheries and wildlife management with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. John Peacock Scholarship John PeacookThis scholarship honors John Peacock in recognition of his longtime commitment to the community and University. John is a former judge and Detroit attorney who moved his family to Sault Ste. Marie in 1973 to open his own law firm, where he practiced for 20 years. He received his bachelor's degree in 1987 and in 1995 received LSSU's highest honor, the Distinguished Citizen Award. In 1998, the coffee house in the Walker Cisler Student and Conference Center was named "Peacock Cove" in recognition of the Peacock family's dedication and commitment to the students of LSSU. Recipients of the award must have financial need, be employed at least part time, and have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Warren Parker Family Scholarship This scholarship was established by Warren and Beverley Parker to be awarded to a full-time student who is a business administration major and a high school graduate from Chippewa, Mackinac or Luce County. Judson (Bucky) Swart Soo Lions Club Memorial Scholarship Judson (Bucky) SwartJudson (Bucky) Swart was a lifetime resident of Sault Ste. Marie. He was a career banker working for Huntington Bank (formerly Sault Bank) for 35 years. A strong supporter of his community, Bucky gave much of his time to help others.

With the financial support of friends, family and the Sault Ste. Marie Lions Club, of which Bucky was an active member, a scholarship was established in 1999. Awarded to a graduating senior of any high school in Chippewa, Luce or Mackinac Counties, recipients must be enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program in the School of Business and Economics. Selection is based on high school grade point average, ACT score and class rank.
Daune Weiss Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Daune Weiss, a prominent Gaylord businesswoman who was tragically killed in a plane crash in October 2000. Just prior to her death, Daune was appointed to the LSSU Foundation Board of Directors. She was instrumental in establishing the Lake State Classic Golf Tournament that benefits both academic and athletic scholarships and had contributed greatly to it's planning and success. This scholarship gives preference to students from Otsego and Mackinac counties majoring in Elementary/Secondary Education or Business who has at least 26 credits with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
