 | This named scholarship was established in 2002 by Barbara (Cunningham ’79) and Chuck (’77) Cliff to honor Barbara’s mother, Margie Cunningham, who graduated from nursing school in 1945. Margie was the inspiration for Barbara to pursue a career in nursing. Barbara attended the LSSU Nursing program from 1976-79. This scholarship is to benefit a nursing student of sophomore or junior status who demonstrates a passion and dedication to working in a nursing field.

Vivian Day Nursing Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | Maurice and Vivian Day, former residents of Sault Ste. Marie and strong supporters of Lake Superior State University, established the Vivian M. Day Endowed Nursing Scholarship in 1995. Named in honor of Mrs. Day, a longtime registered nurse, this scholarship is awarded to a nursing student of sophomore status with a grade point average of 3.0 or better and who has demonstrated leadership and dedication to the nursing profession.

Tempie Dubow Memorial Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | This scholarship was established in memory of Tempie Dubow, a 1973 LSSU nursing graduate who trained at hospitals in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario, Canada. At the time of her death, she was on the nursing staff of Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Tempie exemplified the spirit of nursing. "She chose nursing because she loved to help people and her very presence made patients feel better," said Margaret Pieper, former director of nursing training at LSSU. "She possessed a spirit and enthusiasm that was an inspiration to all of her classmates." Selection is based on a demonstrated commitment to nursing, academic achievement and potential for leadership.

Alana Eitrem Memorial Endowed Fund - Return to the top |
 | Family and friends established this award in memory of Alana "Chicky" Eitrem, an LSSU nursing student from 1984-86. She was a second-year pre-nursing student who was tragically killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident in 1986. Mary Jo Meehan, LSSU professor, described Alana as a "personable young woman. She made a lasting impression on all who knew her. She chose a career in nursing so that she could help others. Her kindness came through in everything she did." The scholarship recipient is recommended by the LSSU nursing faculty. Successful candidates must be a graduate of a Chippewa County high school and possess the same characteristic qualities as Alana.

Donald and Catherine Finlayson Nursing Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | Dr. Donald Finlayson and his wife, Catherine established this endowed scholarship in the fall of 1997 to enhance financial support for nursing students at Lake State. Dr. Finlayson practiced medicine in Sault Ste. Marie from 1946-1982 and was the LSSU Physician from 1946-1978. Two of their children attended Lake State - one in pre-nursing and one in pre-physical therapy. Having always been impressed with the LSSU nursing program, the Finlayson's formed the endowment through a charitable remainder trust. Successful candidates must be a sophomore with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better and has demonstrated the necessity of empathy with patients.

Hospice of the EUP Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | This annual scholarship was established to benefit a senior nursing student who is interested in Hospice and its focus areas. The recipient is selected by the LSSU Nursing Faculty and must commit 40 volunteer hours. Hospice of the EUP is a non-profit organization formed in 1983. The first Medicare certified program in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Hospice of the EUP provides patient care programs - hospice (care for the terminally ill and Bridging (care for the chronically ill). Other services provided are volunteers, coordination of bereavement services, spiritual programming, medical supplies, education and literature.

I-500 Parking Committee LPN Award - Return to the top |
| This scholarship was established by the I-500 Parking Committee where proceeds are derived from parking fees collected at the annual I-500 snowmobile race held the first Saturday in February in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It is the collaborative efforts of this volunteer committee and its members that contribute to the success of the I-500 race. The award benefits a LPN nursing student entering into their third semester of learning who demonstrates a dedication to working in the nursing field. Selection is made by the LSSU Nursing Faculty.

Dixie Stanley Light and Morton Light Nursing Growth Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | Dixie Stanley Light, former LSSU nursing professor, established the Dixie Stanley Light and Morton Light Nursing Growth Scholarship to benefit working nurses who are pursuing baccalaureates (BSN) in their field. The new fund specifically targets registered nurses (RNs) who want, or need, to come back to school for a BSN.
Dixie Light came to LSSU in 1974 as an instructor, shortly thereafter helping create Lake State's BSN program. She developed the Wellness CARE Center, which now serves the campus and public. Light was the Wellness CARE director until 1990, all the while continuing her teaching responsibilities as an associate professor in nursing and developer of courses in trans-cultural nursing and applied gerontology. In addition, she helped establish nursing classes through LSSU's regional centers, hoping to entice working nurses into completing a BSN.

Nancy Mongene and Russell Pattison Nursing Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | Russell Pattison established this scholarship as an expression of his appreciation to healthcare provider, Nancy Mongene, for her friendship and healthcare services. This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore nursing student who has demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in the public healthcare sector and has earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

 | This annual scholarship was established by the May Mitchell Royal Foundation to benefit a nursing student of sophomore or junior status who demonstrates a passion and dedication to working in a nursing field. Selection is made by the LSSU Nursing faculty.

Patrick and MaryAnne P. Shannon Nursing Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | Drs. Patrick and MaryAnne P. Shannon have provided scholarships to students at LSSU since 1983 in recognition to the scholarship donors who provided them financial assistance to earn their undergraduate degrees. MaryAnne is an advanced practice nurse in geriatrics who earned her PhD from MSU. Patrick is a practicing attorney who earned his law degree from U of D, and his EdD from CMU. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior nursing student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference is given to students interested in geriatrics.

TenEyck-Gulliver Nursing Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | The named scholarship is established by Richard and Marjorie Gulliver. Marjorie (nee:TenEyck) Gulliver was born and grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She received a scholarship to MCM & T – Soo Branch 1948-49, a two year college that is now Lake Superior State University. Marjorie is a graduate of the Edward W. Sparrow Hospital School of Nursing in Lansing and is married to Richard Gulliver. Their son, Richard (Rick) Stuart Gulliver attended LSSU just prior to his death from a brain tumor in 1980. This scholarship is established in memory of their son, Rick, and in appreciation of Marjorie’s career as an RN as well as their family’s loyalty to the University and community. Recipients must be a Michigan resident who is a nursing major with at least 26 credits and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | The Chippewa County War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship was established in 1998 to benefit a nursing student of sophomore or junior status who demonstrates community leadership and a dedication to working in a medical or nursing field. The origin of the War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary dates back to a small group formed in 1903. Beginning with these six members, the auxiliary has become a dynamic arm of the hospital, numbering approximately 250 members and performing many functions that aid patients and employees. Along with providing its many services, the auxiliary formed a Remembrance Fund in 1950 for the purpose of giving interest-free loans to deserving students in the nursing and medical fields. The entire source of income is from memorials and loan repayments.

 | This scholarship was established and funded by the War Memorial Hospital medical staff to assist eligible students enrolled in the nursing program. Eligible students must be college sophomores or juniors enrolled in the BSN or BSN completion program as full- or part-time students. Recipients must be from the tri-county area, demonstrate financial need and carry a GPA of 3.0 or higher

 | This scholarship was established by War Memorial Hospital in recognition of an outstanding LSSU nursing student who has successfully completed a summer internship at the Hospital. Successful candidates shall be a junior or senior nursing student with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipient is selected by a committee consisting of directors and staff from War Memorial Hospital and the LSSU Nursing faculty.

Waybrant Family LPN Scholarship - Return to the top |
 | Clifford “Rube” Waybrant of Pickford, Michigan established this scholarship in recognition of the quality of care his wife, Bernice, received in the Long Term Care Unit of War Memorial Hospital. Successful candidates must be a full-time nursing student enrolled in the LPN program who is a graduate of a Chippewa, Mackinaw or Luce County High School (Michigan) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Selection is made by the LSSU Nursing faculty. |
