Carl & Bernitta Burtt Scholarship - Return to the top
This named scholarship was established by the children of Carl and Bernitta Burtt in honor of their parents to benefit a student majoring in any course of study in the College of Arts, Letters and Social Sciences.

Carl Burtt was the second eldest son in a family of thirteen. He dropped out of school at the age of twelve in order to support his brothers and sisters. Although he was unable to complete his own education, he always maintained the value of a good education. Carl was an avid reader and a history buff. He enjoyed learning and made a point to pass this enjoyment on to his children.

Carl married the former Bernitta Wilcox in 1944 and they had six children. Though she did not finish high school, Bernitta valued education and vowed that all of her children would complete high school and would be supported in their effort to attend college. They taught their children that an education was an asset that would always serve them well, and was something that each would keep with them for life. Recipients must be of sophomore status with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need.

Neil and Dolly Isham Scholarship - Return to the top
The named scholarship is established by Michael N. Isham ’77 to honor his parents, Neil and Dolly.

Though neither graduated from high school until they were in their 40’s, Neil and Dolly Isham are hard working people who prize literacy and instilled a sense of life’s curiosity and love of reading in each of their five sons.

Successful candidates must be an incoming freshman who is a graduate of a Michigan high school majoring in any course of study in the College of Arts and Sciences, and who has earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Brianne Lunn Fisheries and Wildlife Management Bellaire, MI

I love the outdoors and was amazed to find out that I could actually make a career out of it. There aren’t many schools that offer a fish and wildlife bachelor’s degree. Lake Superior State not only offers it, but has an excellent reputation in the field. And I wanted to go to Lake State rather than a large school because it is extremely personal. You know your professors on a first name basis. They are willing to help with any questions you have. [ more ]
