Become a Resident or Community Advisor!
Being an RA/CA is a rewarding and demanding experience. RAs/CAs make a difference in the lives of fellow students by supporting them and by fostering communities. Being a Resident or Community Advisor will challenge you to grow both personally and professionally. The experiences you gain in this role will serve you well for the rest of your life, no matter what career you may choose.
Here are the steps to apply for a RA/CA position at Lake Superior State University
- If you meet the RA/CA qualifications and want to make a difference in students lives at LSSU we encourage you to apply.
- Attend an information session about the position held in late November or early December.
- Fill out an RA Application and submit two reference forms.
- Participate in the Group Process and individual interviews
You must be at least sophomore status at the conclusion of the semester in which you are applying.
You must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher at the time of application and at the conclusion of the semester in which you are applying. A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 must be maintained during the period of employment.
You must be full-time student status and be sophomore standing by the employment start date.
You must have completed at least one semester at LSSU by the employment start date.
You must be available for employment for two semesters upon initial hire. Start date will be in August and end date will be late April or early May of the following year. Exact dates will be set prior to hire.
You must not be on any University probation (academic or social). During the period of employment RA/CA’s must not be in violation of any University policies or procedures.
You are expected to place the position as one of your highest priorities. Employment and extracurricular involvement outside of the position must have the approval of your Area Coordinator and the Director of Housing and Residential Life. You may work no more than 10 hours per week. To work in excess of 10 hours per week requires specific approval in advance by the Director of Housing and Residential Life for the time-period involved.
The application packages will be available to be picked up at the information sessions held in late November or early December. After that time they are made available in the Campus Life Office, in 125 Cisler Center. Applications will be due in January. Be sure to turn in your application on time; no late applications will be accepted. Each candidate is responsible for distributing the reference form to the people chosen as references. Choose three people who know you well and can give an honest evaluation of you. At least one reference must be a current Resident or Community Advisor. For assured return, you may want to give them an envelope addressed to the Campus Life Office 650 W. Easterday Avenue, 125 Cisler Center, Sault Ste Marie MI 49783.
Each candidate is required to participate in the group process interviews. The group process interviews will take place in February. The activities will allow the selection personnel to see the candidates in small group problem-solving situations. You will sign up for a group process time when you submit your application.
You will have one individual interview that will last approximately 30 minutes. Each candidate will be interviewing with a team of three people; one professional Residential Life staff member and two current Resident or Community Advisors. You will sign up for your interview at the end of the group process. On your scheduled interview day, arrive on time and be sure you know where you are going. If you do not understand a question, please ask the interviewers to restate the question. Come prepared with questions you would like to have answered. You may want to consult with the Career Center staff for hints on effective interviewing.
