Title: Environmental Analysis Laboratory Manager and Chemist
Function and Responsibility
Under administrative direction from the Dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, the EAL Manager is responsible for managing and supervising the Environmental Analysis Laboratory and the student workers in the EAL. As a chemist, this position is responsible for the set up, maintenance and trouble shooting/repair of the analytical chemical instrumentation. Additionally, this position is responsible for maintaining chemical inventory; keeping current chemical Material Safety Data Sheets, and insuring the proper collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
Duties and Responsibilities
Orders, receives, stocks, and inventories EAL equipment and supplies. Inspects and ensures that purchased equipment functions correctly; returns damaged equipment. Works with the Science Laboratory Manager/Chemical Hygiene Officer to record and maintain EAL chemical inventory

Manages the day-to-day operations of the EAL. Supervises student employees who work in the EAL, manages the EAL budget, invoices the EAL customers, prepares bids for sample analysis and is the EAL representative to outside clients. Provides chemical safety training for student employees.

Maintains and trouble shoots/repairs the chemistry analytical instrumentation.

Prepares bid orders for chemicals, supplies and equipment for the EAL. Insures the proper storage and disposal of hazardous waste materials according to OSHA standards.

Assumes responsibility for safe operation of the EAL and individuals working in the EAL. Works with the Chemical Hygiene Officer to ensure the safe handling and disposal of chemicals.

Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor\'s degree in chemistry or equivalent work experience with an emphasis on the management of a working chemical analysis laboratory and the ability to maintain and repair chemical instrumentation. Additionally, must possess computer skills that include word processing and spread sheets. Should have at least five years experience as a chemist; ability to perform all assigned responsibilities in an independent manner; knowledge of chemical storage/disposal procedures and practices; ability to keep and maintain routine records and to make reports from such records; ability to communicate effectively and to maintain positive interpersonal relations.
Physical and Mental Demands
Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a periodic basis. Adequate health and fitness to maintain long hours and busy schedule. Use of gross motor skills to perform supervisory and organizational duties; use of fine motor skills in operation of computer; ability to hear, see and speak clearly, with or without aids; ability to work with numbers.
