Function and Responsibility
Under the administrative direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs, this position is responsible for the direction and supervision of the security, loss control, law enforcement, parking, emergency preparedness, safety and related operations. The director is also the campus liaison with local county, state, and federal law enforcement and service agencies. This position also supervises the security staff and acts as field supervisor of the criminal justice cadets and student auxiliary.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
Direct and supervise the unit in accordance with city, state and federal laws and regulations, as well as institutional policies and procedures.

Supervise, train, evaluate and oversee campus security staff. Provide or arrange for training opportunities for officers and student staff. Responsible for the oversight of training and supervision of Criminal Justice Cadets in consultation with the instructor and Chair of Criminal Justice Department.

Strive to ensure campus safety for each of the University publics in cooperation with appropriate University departments and personnel.

Build and maintain strong working relationships with the appropriate law enforcement agencies, public safety organizations and all University offices. Work with campus entities, local law enforcement and fire prevention agencies in cases of fire, criminal action or civil disturbances.

Work in conjunction with Physical Plant Director to insure compliance with workplace safety regulations to include but not limited to: Chemical Hygiene Plan, Chemical Use Plan, Workplace Violence Program, Hazardous Communications Plan, disposal of hazardous waste, employee safety training, etc.

Coordinate activities, programs and services with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department and other law enforcement agencies.

Monitor and evaluate departmental functions and staff for effectiveness and efficiency; complete staff performance evaluations and discipline staff if necessary.

Conduct criminal background checks authorized by the University.

Develop, maintain and improve practices and policies that will enhance the unit's effectiveness and efficiency in support of the University's mission.

Work various shifts performing security related duties; subject to evening and weekend call outs.

Complete and submit required or requested reports on a timely and as needed basis. Maintain logs and submit data required for reporting of crime statistics to the Office of Post-secondary Education to ensure compliance with federal reporting guidelines.

Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in criminal justice or appropriate field required. Three to five years experience as a campus security officer or as a law enforcement officer. Superior oral, written and interpersonal relationship skills; the willingness and ability to work closely with each of the University publics, and the understanding and ability to manage budgets. Increasing levels of management and investigation experience preferred.

 
Physical and Mental Demands
Adequate health and fitness to maintain long hours and busy schedule, and to traverse around campus, as required. Use of gross motor skills to perform supervisory and organizational duties; use of fine motor skills in operation of keyboard equipment to produce schedules, budgets and reports; ability to hear, see and speak clearly, with or without aids, to represent the University in public appearances; mental capacity to assist with numerous administrative responsibilities; ability to work with numbers in budgetary preparations.
