Title: Teacher Aide
Function and Responsibility
PRIMARY responsibility is to serve as a role model and guide for practicum students and teaching interns, and to supervise the children’s welfare and safety adhering to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Code of Ethical Conduct. This position reports directly to the Center Supervisor. This position is a 12 month position working 5 hours per day.

Duties and Responsibilities
Adhere to all requirements as regulated by the Michigan Licensing Rules for Child Care Centers.

Plan and implement lesson plans as needed in the Center’s learning areas.

Assist the Supervisor and Lead Teacher in the guidance of the practicum students, teaching interns, substitute teachers, and work-study students in their teaching or assigned duties.

Adhere to a developmentally-appropriate curriculum and environment based on the philosophy of the Child Development Center which follows the curriculum theories as taught in the early childhood program,.

Follow the Center’s discipline policy, which is in accordance with licensing regulations and which follows the discipline and guidance techniques as taught in the early childhood program.

Assist in maintaining a healthy, safe, and child-centered environment.

Assure the safety and physical and emotional well-being of the children based on their individual needs.

Incorporate principles of child development and current, developmentally appropriate teaching practices that meet the physical, cognitive, creative social and emotional needs of all Center children.

Maintain good relationships with parents/guardians keeping lines of communication open at all times.

Practice confidentiality in child/family issues.

Assist the Supervisor and Lead Teacher in developing programs that are responsive to family needs, interests and cultural heritage.

Maintain accurate daily attendance records of children in absence of Lead Teacher.

Report any significant incidents regarding children, staff, or students immediately to Supervisor and Lead Teacher.

Report any suspected child abuse to Supervisor and Lead Teacher immediately.

Help maintain Center and its equipment for the health and safety of children, students, and staff.

Check inventory of supplies and report needs to Supervisor.

Assist Supervisor and Lead Teacher in enrollment of children for next semester as requested.

Assist in preparation of Center for fall, spring, and summer openings.

Assist Supervisor in maintaining records for staff and children as requested.

Assist Supervisor and Lead Teacher in collecting records for staff and children as requested

Assist Supervisor and Lead Teacher with planning of the morning and afternoon snacks. Preparation and clean-up of meals including lunch is also required.

Closes Center at end of day with required specific tasks.

May act as substitute teacher in case of Lead Teacher’s absence.

Assist with any other tasks as requested by Supervisor.
Minimum of an associate’s degree in early childhood education or child development. Consideration will be given to candidates within 12 credits of degree completion to be completed within one semester of hire. Practicum must already be completed

Minimum of one year of employment as a teacher/caregiver in a child care
center, preschool, Head Start, junior kindergarten or kindergarten classroom.

Completion of 2 semester credits in a child care administration course from an
accredited college or university.
Physical and Mental Demands
Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and have adequate health and fitness to be able to maintain a busy schedule; gross motor and fine motor skills as they apply to the implementation of
the children’s curriculum; ability to problem-solve; ability to understand and perform
oral and written communications; ability to see, hear, and speak with or without aids to perform normal teaching tasks; and be able to represent the University in its promotional and recruiting activities.

Must be able to pass a physical exam, TB test, criminal history and child abuse/neglect
screenings including a fingerprint check. First Aid/CPR certification and any other
licensing requirements as deemed necessary will be required.
