Title: Dean: College of Business and Engineering
Function and Responsibility
The Dean is under general supervision of and directly accountable to the Provost; responsible for leadership, management and administration of the School of Business, School of Engineering, Prototype Development Center and other associated entities. The Dean’s responsibilities include facilitating a vision and strategic direction while leading the college in a unified plan of action. As a leader of the faculty, the Dean supports, encourages, and promotes excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and service. The Dean is responsible for program development, faculty recruitment and retention, budget development and management, and for facilitating student success. She or he is accountable for the sound fiscal management of the college and of all units within it. The Dean also provides leadership for fundraising and development efforts in that academic area and maintains extensive contacts with alumni, regional business and industries, the LSSU Foundation, and the community at large.
Duties and Responsibilities
Institutional: Serve on Provost Council and other committees as appointed; participate in the development of academic and university policies.

Curriculum and instruction: Provide leadership in planning and coordinating academic programs which include assessment, evaluation, development and revision of courses and curricula. Lead and/or coordinate accreditation efforts where and when appropriate.

Faculty and staff: Recruit, interview and recommend prospective faculty and staff; schedule and assign teaching and other school responsibilities to faculty; evaluate faculty performance; make retention, promotion, and tenure recommendations; administer the collective bargaining agreements, university procedures and work rules; supervise other college staff; promote professional development; evaluate heads of academic units; evaluate staff. Assign faculty teaching loads. Coordinate and lead course scheduling and future planning.

Students: Recruit, advise and counsel students; mediate problems between students and faculty.

Liaison: Develop, coordinate and maintain relationships with internal and external constituencies. These will include both academic and economic groups.

Budget and payroll: Prepare, recommend and administer the College budget and payroll.

Teaching: Teach course offerings as time and efficiency of operation permit.

Planning: Provide leadership in the development and implementation of strategic planning for the Unit to ensure:

1. Academic Units are accountable for the utilization of resources and improvement of annual output, qualitatively and/or quantitatively. This includes the development and implementation of an assessment plan, operating budget, and accreditation activities.

2. Academic Units are actively involved in developing appropriate scholarly and applied research activities to provide stimulating professional development for the faculty and to enhance the education of students.

3. Academic programs are current and relevant to the needs of society and industry. Graduates will have the problem solving and communication skills necessary to enter careers or graduate education. All Units have approved assessment plans in place and are following those plans.

4. Academic programs have effective and supportive advisory committees that provide valuable guidance for strengthening the curriculum and excellent support for the development of laboratories and sponsorship for applied research activities.

5. Academic Units interact with faculty in other departments and colleges in instructional and applied research activities.

6. Academic Units foster the inclusion of undergraduate and graduate students to assist in instructional and applied research activities.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Earned doctorate preferred, minimum of a master’s degree in appropriate area; five to eight years related professional experience; demonstrated leadership qualities; administrative and teaching experience; demonstrated record of scholarly and service activities.
Physical and Mental Demands
Adequate physical fitness to be able to sit and concentrate for long periods of time; use of gross motor skills to perform supervisory and organizational duties; use of fine motor skills to operate computer; problem solving ability; ability to understand and work with numbers; ability to see, hear, and speak with or without the use of aids to perform normal office tasks. Ability to occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
