Title: Director of Public Relations
Function and Responsibility
Under the general supervision of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, coordinates and manages the Public Relations Office and the Graphics Department in accordance with the mission, objectives, directives, procedures and policies of the University.
Duties and Responsibilities
Creates and recommends for implementation, comprehensive programs for the dissemination of general information about and overall promotion of the University.

Organizes and conducts comprehensive public relations programs to release positive publicity about the University; develops public interest and understanding of the University's services and mission through the media.

Writes and supervises staff in writing and disseminating news releases; responds to press inquiries; arranges institutional contacts between the media and University personnel, including press conferences.

Provides advice and counsel to the University concerning public relations techniques, publicity programs and public relations aspects of University activities.

Advises the University on potential problems and opportunities in public relations, and on the climate between the University and the public.

Promotes communications within the University and with other national/ international educational institutions.

Supervises and participates in editing and publication of the internal newsletter, the Almanac, "This Week at Lake State", and any other University publications as assigned.

Supervises and participates in arranging the taking, processing, and disseminating of photographs; prepares and disseminates radio and commercial television material.

Participates in maintaining and preserving all office reference files, mailing lists, negative and photo files.

Participates in community activities and civic programs as a University representative; participates in professional meetings, conferences and University committees as assigned.

Plan, prepare, and monitor two department budgets, expenditures, and related activities; evaluate and supervise all assigned staff, including student workers.

Teach classes, if assigned; undertake special projects and assignments as directed.
Bachelor's degree in journalism; three to five years of professional experience in public relations or broadcast journalism, journalism, advertising or closely related field. Outstanding interpersonal skills required.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Initiative, tact, and discretion required; ability to maintain confidentiality of the office. Willingness to periodically work an erratic, sometimes extended schedule, e.g. evenings and weekends, as required; downstate and limited overnight travel expected.
Physical and Mental Demands
Adequate health and physical fitness to travel, keep extended hours, work under pressure, and meet multiple deadlines. Use of fine motor skills in operation of word processing equipment. Ability to read and understand, to hear and see with or without aids, to speak clearly in order to communicate with the media and public. Full use of arms, hands, legs and feet to participate in community activities and required travel.
