Luke Fera of Sault Ste. Marie graduated from LSSU in 2006 with a degree in biology and is now working toward a master's degree in epidemiology at University of Western Ontario in London. He plans to continue his studies in the medical sciences.

Function and Responsibility
Under administrative direction from the President, responsible for all activities associated with the Physical Plant department, including acting as the University representative in the planning and development of new, or the remodeling of existing facilities.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for buildings, grounds, roads, landscape, ice arena, pool, motor pool, building attendant functions, Norris maintenance personnel and trades.

Interview and recommend candidates for employment; establish and revise as necessary, job specifications for departmental personnel.

Develop and maintain an effective preventive maintenance program.

Assist the President, or other designated University officials in developing program statements for new facilities or facilities to be remodeled; act as liaison with the architect and agents of the State or other funding agencies during planning and/or construction of the facilities; maintain current records, including costs, drawings, records of underground facilities, lands, acreage, and other records and data pertinent to ownership of campus real estate.

Administer and supervise the University stores, including activities associated with receiving and shipping; establish procedures for requisitioning and deliveries to University departments, maintaining appropriate records for inventory, and establishing appropriate procedures and controls.

Responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Central Heating Plant, utilities distribution systems and all repairs and adjustments to building mechanical and electrical systems.

Evaluate and prepare campus green and LEED programs for energy requirements, conservation, and establish proposals for increased efficiency in use of energy.

Supervise office activities related to the Physical Plant, including campus keys, timekeeping, payroll, budget, scheduling, employment, in-service training, inventories, and records.

Assist other offices in matters that relate to collective bargaining or planning that have a direct relationship with Physical Plant.

Act as the University representative on construction projects; write specifications, inspect all contractor’s work before approving payment; work in cooperation with architect's engineers during design and construction of all projects, both State and "in house".

Provide and maintain a record system listing all buildings, locations, building age, condition, value and replacement cost; provide and maintain key and card access requirements for all locked doors.

Responsible for the University Safety & Health program.

Assist in other related duties and requirements as they may arise or be assigned.
 
Qualifications
Four year engineering degree in mechanical, electrical or civil areas; five years experience in the supervision of maintenance, construction and support personnel desirable.
Masters degree in Business Administration preferred.
 
Physical and Mental Demands
Adequate physical fitness to be able to sit and concentrate for long periods of time; use of fine motor skills to operate computer; problem solving ability; ability to understand and work with numbers; ability to see, hear, and speak with or without the use of aids to perform normal office tasks.
