Laker Gold Scholarship Competition

Almost 50 graduating high school seniors competed for three Honors program scholarships during the second annual Laker Gold Scholarship Competition held at Lake Superior State University on Jan. 28 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Students wrote competitive essays and were personally interviewed by LSSU faculty. Nearly half had ACT composites of at least 30; 80% (up from 44% last year) boast GPAs of 3.96 or higher. They came from 31 Michigan counties (28 in 2011), with academic interests in engineering and the sciences, liberal arts, political science, English, and education. A quarter of the competitors were from Upper Peninsula. LSSU's Admissions office will announce who landed the scholarships before the end of February.

 

A scholarship competition for outstanding students

Lake Superior State University invites academically talented students to compete for scholarship opportunities to LSSU. This program is specifically designed for talented high school seniors to compete for major scholarships to LSSU. These scholarships are in addition to the automatic merit scholarships awarded upon admission to Lake Superior State University.

Eligibility:   High School seniors who meet our Board of Trustees Distinguished Scholarship criteria are eligible for this competition. If you have a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher (based upon your grades earned in grades 9-11) and ACT Composite score of 28 or better, you are eligible. Our Board of Trustees Scholarships are determined by a total point value that is based upon your GPA and ACT scores. You can determine if you qualify by using our scholarship calculator located at www.lssu.edu/finaid/scalc.

Award Consideration and deadlines: 

To be considered for a scholarship at this competition:

  • Apply for admission to LSSU no later than December 1, 2011  if you wish to be considered for scholarships based upon this competition. All supporting materials (including ACT scores) must be received and postmarked by January 6, 2012.
  • Register for the competition by Friday, January 6, 2012. You may do so online or by calling the Admissions Office at 1-888-800-LSSU (5778). Register online today.
  • Participate in the competition.
  • Award notification will be made in March.

Scholarship to be awarded:

  • Laker Gold Scholarship:  Full Tuition – renewable  (3 scholarships will be awarded)

Value:  Full tuition per year inclusive of other scholarship awards. Students will also receive partial room and board awarded with their other merit based scholarship ($2,000 minimum).

Competition: The competition will consist of an essay and personal interview. You will be given one hour to write an essay and 15 minutes for the interview. The topic of the essay will be announced at the competition. In addition to the essay and interview, your GPA and ACT/SAT scores will be evaluated.   

Parents: Parents will have the opportunity to attend a Parent Program while the students are writing their essays. A panel of LSSU staff members will present information and answer questions concerning admission, academic advising, financial aid, housing and residence life, orientation, etc.   

Format: Half-day program including essay competition, personal interview, parents program, campus tours, dinner and evening hockey game. A full schedule of events will be posted on this website within 2 weeks of the competition date.

The 2011 Laker Gold Scholarship Award recipients are: Mark Stephenson of Atlanta, MI; Coleson Wrege of Shelby Twp, MI; and Nathan Fishel of Newaygo, MI. Congratulations to each of you and thank you all for joining us for this inaugural event and making it such a success!

Fully a third of the competitors were from the Upper Peninsula, with Chippewa county leading the pack with eight students. LSSU's Admissions office will announce who landed the scholarships before the end of February.

I have also accepted a full-funded graduate research assistantship to work with the Montana National Guard on developing magnetic techniques to detect unexploded ordinance. My summer internship with Geolex, a company under contract with the Guard, will study acquiring data, performing analysis, and offering interpretation on unexploded ordinance." [ more ]
