Caroline Demary-Elliott of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, found Lake State to be the right fit for her when she decided to pursue a career as a teacher.
The former Wawa, Ont. resident is majoring in mathematics for secondary education.
"I chose to study at LSSU because it was much cheaper than going away for school and with my degree from here I won't have to apply to a teacher's college, as I would in Ontario," she said.
"Not only is LSSU close and convenient to my home in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, but the atmosphere is very welcoming. All of the staff and students seem to be really open, and the teacher-to-student ratio is very personal, unlike larger universities."

LSSU offers degree programs in such areas as Forensic Chemistry, Geology, Fisheries and Wildlife Management, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, Fire Science, Education, Nursing, Engineering, Robotics, Environmental Health, Athletic Training and Computer Science.
LSSU's border-town atmosphere pleases her, as well.
"As a Canadian student, I love the fact that LSSU is an American school. Even though the two countries are very close here, there's still a different type of culture about the school, and it is a really great opportunity for me to experience something new and different."
Caroline intends to expand her horizons upon graduation.
"Once I graduate as a teacher, I have aspirations to teach in Spain or Japan."
Caroline says although she is not currently involved in campus clubs, she plans to get involved with Greek life and Student Government next semester. When she's not studying, she works at "Bootlegger," a Canadian-based clothing store and volunteers with the Royal Sovereign Sea Cadet Corps, a Canadian youth organization.
