About Library Services
The KJS Library offers support services for regional students through its Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Reference departments. The ILL department provides document delivery of books, government documents, and periodical articles sent directly to the student's address. Reference assistance is available by email: reference@lssu.edu, telephone: 906-635-2167 or FAX 906-635-2193. Reference librarians are available from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. M-F, and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. M-Th during the academic year. Summer and semester break hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. M-F. It is also possible to make an appointment with a librarian on weekends.

Accessing Articles
Regional students now have access to articles via My.LSSU.edu, to LSSU's database systems. FirstSearch provides access to a selection of databases, which cover a variety of subjects. Some databases indicate which periodicals are owned by LSSU and most databases have some articles available in electronic full text format.

Proquest provides access to the Criminal Justice Periodicals Abstracts, ABI/Inform, the Cumulative Index to Nursing Literature (CINAHL) and Education Complete. All of these databases include selected electronic full-text journals and periodicals.

Access to database systems is available from the My Library tab of LSSU’s My.LSSU portal. 1) Open your web browser. 2) Log on to your My.LSSU account. 3) Click on the My Library tab, and 4) Scroll through the list of databases on the left, to find a database that suits your information needs.

For help in choosing an appropriate database, contact a librarian through the Ask a Librarian link, or by e-mailing a librarian at reference@lssu.edu.

Access to additional databases is available to Michigan residents through Michigan eLibrary (MeL). Databases available at this site include General Reference Gold, Health Reference Center Academic, Custom Newspapers, Practice Tests and children’s resources, as well as FirstSearch databases. Go to the Mel web site at www.mel.org. Click on the link to Log on at home or work . At the next screen enter your Michigan Driver’s License or State Id Number and press enter. A screen displaying the databases should appear.

Accessing Books
Books can be found in Voyager, the library’s online catalog. Access to Voyager is available from LSSU’s Library home page at www.lssu.edu/library . Click on the line: Search Library Catalog. A search screen for Voyager will be displayed. Please be aware that LSSU shares its online catalog with Northern Michigan University, Gogebic College and Finlandia University, so all holdings found will not be owned by LSSU.

Requesting Books and Articles
After identifying books or articles needed from the KJS Library, you may submit your requests electronically or by FAX.

When using databases in the FirstSearch system, articles not owned by LSSU can be ordered online. To order an article, have the article citation displayed on the screen you wish to order, click on the ILL (interlibrary loan) icon to display the ILL form. Complete all fields and use the bar code number from your LSSU ID card for the ID number field. (Students without LSSU Ids use 0001 as the ID number.) Send your completed request to the LSSU ILL Department by clicking “Submit.”

Materials found in other databases (Proquest for example) or other sources can be ordered electronically or by FAX. When you are looking at the citation of an article you would like to request, click on the Search for Full Text link. If the item is available in another database, it should open. If it is not available through another database, there should be a preferred option for Interlibrary Loan, and an alternative option for Interlibrary Loan. Try the preferred option first, and if it responds that the item can't be found, click on the alternative option. • Be sure to include all information requested, writing carefully and legibly.
• Do not abbreviate titles of books journals or words in an article title. Incomplete or inaccurate information may result in delays in processing your requests!
• Requests for up to 15 items per week per student are accepted.
• Materials are sent directly to the student’s home address.
• Return materials borrowed from LSSU via U.S. mail using the enclosed mailing label and postmarked by the due date.
