Alum Success

Elaina Marinik

My education at Lake State taught me not only the basics of exercise science and health and wellness but prepared me for my future research career. I became involved in national organizations, improved my networking skills to create working relationships, and ended up with an amazing paid internship that turned into a 3-year research professional position at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Now in graduate school pursuing a doctorate degree at Virginia Tech, I rely on the knowledge I acquired at Lake State and put it to practice daily while discussing health-related topics in class or conducting obesity and inflammation research in our laboratory.

Office of the President

Thomas Pleger, Ph.D.Welcome to Lake Superior State University!

Overlooking the beautiful St. Mary’s River and the world famous Soo Locks, Lake Superior State University is on the grounds of the former U.S. Army Fort Brady. In the fall of 1946, the fort was transformed into LSSU to serve returning World War II veterans and it has been helping students achieve their educational goals ever since.

LSSU is known for its distinctive programs that provide a great deal of hands-on experience and research opportunities for undergraduates that are not often found at other schools. Our students work side-by-side with faculty who are dedicated to teaching, passionate about their fields of study, and genuinely care about the welfare of their students, all of whom they know by name. An LSSU education can open doors and create opportunities for the rest of your life. We are focused on student success and dedicated to supporting a community of learning and discovery.

LSSU offers a full spectrum of majors, including many areas of professional study. All are grounded in a liberal education experience designed to teach critical thinking and analytical skills, communication skills, an understanding of math, science, and technology, and an appreciation for the human experience and the arts. These skills are the foundation for all majors and the basis for becoming an educated person. Regardless of a student’s major, all of them have the opportunity to leave Lake State as well-educated and skilled graduates ready to start their careers, go on for advanced degrees, and to continue along their path of lifelong learning. Our faculty and staff take great pride in experiential learning opportunities and engage our students in their fields of study, professions, and expertise.

Students at LSSU will find their experiences and studies to be both challenging and rewarding. We challenge them to become involved in all that LSSU has to offer both in and out of the classroom, and to take advantage of the many student activities, clubs, athletics, lectures, and performances on campus. Students and visitors alike will also want to explore the region, as our university is situated in one of the most picturesque locations of the upper Great Lakes and Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and just across the river from all that northern Ontario has to offer, too.

We want to see our students succeed, achieve, and develop an excitement and passion for learning and for the university. We’re redefining the classroom to make that happen. Come see for yourself! A campus tour is the best way to determine if LSSU is the right place for you. We’re confident that once you’re here, you won’t want to leave.

Political Science ...

Krystal Bosley

Krystal Bosley
Political Science

"The study of political science/law is basically the path of least resistance for me. It is a subject that has always interested me, and one that I have proved to be naturally insightful in. Studying political science isn’t just the study of how governments function or how it is composed, but the study of why it exists and to what ends. In short, it is the study of what makes everything else possible."
