Alum Success

Elaina Marinik

My education at Lake State taught me not only the basics of exercise science and health and wellness but prepared me for my future research career. I became involved in national organizations, improved my networking skills to create working relationships, and ended up with an amazing paid internship that turned into a 3-year research professional position at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Now in graduate school pursuing a doctorate degree at Virginia Tech, I rely on the knowledge I acquired at Lake State and put it to practice daily while discussing health-related topics in class or conducting obesity and inflammation research in our laboratory.

Office of the President

Past Presidents: The Light Years, 1982-1986

Dr. Kenneth Light

Dr. Kenneth Light, former Vice President for Academic Affairs, was selected by the Board of Control to succeed President Shouldice in 1982. He was instrumental in establishing the Lake Superior State College Foundation as the institution's fund-raising arm.

Academic programs such as automated systems engineering technology and fire science were added, and significant strides were made in computer applications in both academic and administrative operations. In addition, an aquatic laboratory was established on the St. Mary's River with the help of the Edison Sault Electric Company. The Lab continues to make significant contributions to the St. Mary's River and beyond.

Hands-on Training...

Brian Applegate

Brian Applegate
Fire Science

LSSU's dedicated three-story fire lab made all the difference to Brian Applegate.

"Our certification training classes offered real situations," Brian says. Students practice victim search techniques while controlling and extinguishing fires. Applegate says his favorite exercise was the live fire flashover simulation. "We saw how fires evolved as they burned," he says. "It’s as close as you can get to the real thing."
