Mission Statement

Student Alumni Involved for Lake State (SAILS) exists to:

  • enhance Lake Superior State University as a great place to live and learn
  • assist LSSU with pre-college counseling on and off campus
  • serve as the Lake State's student ambassadors and to represent the University in a positive manner to the various publics
  • serve as a main link between students, administration and alumni.

Our History

SAILS was established in 1994 by Mark Jastorff as one of the first endeavors of the newly rechartered Alumni Association and Alumni Relations office. Jastorff, who has initiated two other SAA/SF groups in his previous positions, understood the importance of a student alumni group to the future of the Alumni Association.

SAILS began with one student attending the Salt Lake City conference. A corps of five students recruited their friends for certain special events and programs. We fluctuated between 6 and 20 members in the early years. Today, our membership hovers around 30 and we sponsor a dozen campus activities and projects to the calendar and have become the leadership team on campus.

The SAILS logo was developed by our advisor and revised by the Graphics department. It symbolizes the influence of the Great Lakes while aptly fitting our acronym.

Membership Requirements

A member must be in good standing with the university and maintain a grade point average of 2.5.

Spiffy, the SAILS Mascot

Spiffy was adopted as our mascot during the Ohio State University hosted District 5 conference. The loveable amphibian is presented to the SAILS who is late for any event. The name came from Dr. Arbuckle, LSSU President, who commenting on the SAILS new dress jackets at a Great Lake State Weekend banquet, asked the audience…"Don't they look spiffy!?"

You will notice that apparently Spiffy does not swim well, so the University of Wisconsin-Platteville gave him an inflatable swimming ring.

Meetings

Our meetings are held every Sunday night at 6:03pm in the Cisler Center.
