The purpose of the Lake Superior State University Volunteer Center is to promote civic engagement in the LSSU and larger communities through volunteer and service opportunities. One of our primary goals is to weave the spirit of service into the fabric of Lake Superior State University. We do this by providing ongoing programs like the Michigan Service Scholars, by informing the student body about episodic volunteer opportunities for those who want to make a big difference in a short amount of time, and by connecting students like you to community organizations that match best your skills and interests.

That all sounds good, right? But, what does volunteering do for you?

  • You gain valuable work experience!
  • You build new skills and get better at old ones!
  • You meet new people and make new friends!
  • Best of all, you know that YOU are the vehicle for social change!

The LSSU Volunteer Center was formally established in 2006, as a satellite office from the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Through our partnership with the United Way, the Volunteer Center is growing by leaps and bounds. All students, faculty, and staff are invited (and encouraged) to use the resources of the Volunteer Center. The office is staffed from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend hours will be available during the academic year.

Stop by and visit us in the Office of Campus Life, 125 Cisler Center. E-mail us at volunteer@lssu.edu or call us at (906) 635-2187.

Past Projects

Make A Difference Day, October 25, 2008, 10am - 3pm

The LSSU Volunteer Center is sponsoring a project that takes students “Into the Streets” for the second time this semester. Saturday, October 25 is a national day of service, Make A Difference Day! Students who volunteer will go to one of five community agencies and spend two or more hours on a service project that benefits the community. Volunteers can serve at the Hearthside Assisted Living, Best of Friends Animal Shelter, WMH Long Term Care, Goodwill Store, or Habitat for Humanity Re-store.

Volunteers will meet up at 10:00 a.m. at the Cisler Center on Saturday, October 25th and depart to project sites from there via carpool. Volunteer drivers are needed for this event; please contact us if you are able to drive! Volunteers will return to campus around 2 p.m. where there will be a short reflection session and delicious food!

Why volunteer? You’ll get out into the community, meet new people, make friends, develop new skills and of course, have fun! Want to kick off the year right by contributing to your community? Volunteer for Into the Streets!

If you are interested in helping your community or if you have any questions, please contact Jill, Carrie, or Beth in the LSSU Volunteer Center at (906) 635-2187 or volunteer@lssu.edu.
