Middle Schoolers, Session I

Edventure Camp is a weeklong hands-on learning experience in a particular field such as ecology, geology, creative writing, video game design, and many more. Edventures are taught by LSSU Faculty and Staff who are knowledgeable about their subject matter and share this enthusiasm with their students. Each course encourages creative thinking, the development of problem solving skills, and individual exploration of student interests. Students will have a chance to meet and interact with other students who share their interests. More Information...

  • Resident Fee: $625 (Early Bird - payment by June 6: $575)

Morning Edventures (9:00 a.m. – Noon)
Participants will select ONE Edventure from this list:

Drama, Action, and Stage Make-up
Learn drama improvisation, stage combat, physical comedy, and stage make-up. Each day, you will participate in different activities and you will learn that there is more to acting than learning lines!  No previous acting or theatre experience necessary. Taught by Dan Choszczyk.

Be An Astronomer!
The planetarium projector will be used to demonstrate and simplify the many illusional motions that take place in the sky.  We will look at the consequences of the motion of the moon, planets, sun and stars as seen from our rotating earth.  An inventory of celestial objects such as planets, double stars, variable stars, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae will be developed, described, and observed. Sorcerer’s Magic
Magic visually demonstrates the concept of shifting paradigms in an unusual and memorable way.  The concept of magic provides fascinating examples of "thinking outside the box." Ryan McFarling, a professional illusionist, from Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario will be the instructor.  www.unreal-magic.com

Power of Numbers
We all use math every day!  Students will discover how powerful and exciting the world of mathematics can be while solving a variety of mathematical problems.  Daily math explorations will involve fractions, algebra, geometry, and measurement. Dr. Lorraine Gregory, LSSU Mathemathics Faculty

Video Game Design
Explore the world of video game design as you design and tweak your own video game.  You will explore the process of game creation from initial idea to final concept.  You will take home your completed project as well as code for several games developed at Lake Superior State University. Create Your Own Web Page
Learn to create professional-looking web sites. This hands-on course will provide all the skills and resources you will need to start designing a web site. Topics include XHTML, cascading style sheets, and web page graphics. Learning scripting languages will allow you to make dynamic pages. Dreamweaver will also be explored. Handouts, support materials and links to free Internet resources will be provided. Dr. Mark Terwilliger, LSSU Mathematics and Computer Science Faculty

Young Writers
Do you like to write, want to meet others your age who like to write, and have the opportunity to receive personal instruction from the LSSU Creative Writing Faculty? During the week, you will explore places of interest in Sault Sainte Marie and use the history and beauty of the area as inspiration for your writing.  So come explore the Sault in person and on the page.  Experience a variety of creative writing genres, including poetry, playwriting, songwriting, fiction and non-fiction prose.  Jillena Rose, LSSU Writing Center Coordinator; Dr. Suzanne Thomas, LSSU English Faculty

CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)
Learn how investigators are turning to science to find important clues to help them solve crimes. You will learn how to collect evidence, conduct forensic laboratory analyses, and demonstrate different crime solving strategies.  Laboratory learning experiences include physical evidence collection, DNA analysis, GPS/GIS and classification of fibers by infrared spectroscopy (IR), over-the-counter drugs by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and hair by microscopy.  You will use your newly gained knowledge to investigate a variety of mock crime scenes.  Students will also learn how real investigators use science, creativity, and mathematical skills to solve a variety of crimes.  Dr. Aaron Westrick –  LSSU Criminal Justice Faculty; Dr. Judy Westrick - LSSU Chemistry Faculty; Dr. Nancy Kirkpatrick – LSSU Biology Faculty

Dance with Future Stars
This class is for athletes, actors, or students who love to move and create! Students will learn the basic elements of ballet, modern, and jazz dance with a concentration in stretch and flexibility, Highland and Scottish Country Dance.  Students will apply dance techniques to improvisation exercises and choreography solo and group works.  A final showing of class will be presented at the end of the session.  This dance program is designed for students with minimal or no previous dance training. Tennis
LSSU Varsity Tennis Coach, Charlie Drury, will instruct on the fundamentals of tennis.  All skill levels welcome.
