High Schoolers Camp, Session II

Edventure Camp is a weeklong hands-on learning experience in a particular field such as ecology, geology, creative writing, video game design, and many more. Edventures are taught by LSSU Faculty and Staff who are knowledgeable about their subject matter and share this enthusiasm with their students. Each course encourages creative thinking, the development of problem solving skills, and individual exploration of student interests. Students will have a chance to meet and interact with other students who share their interests. More Information...

Participants will select ONE Edventure from this list:

CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)
You will learn how to collect evidence, conduct forensic laboratory analyses, and demonstrate different crime solving strategies.  Laboratory learning experiences include physical evidence collection, DNR analysis, GPS/GIS and classification of fibers by infrared spectroscopy (IR), over-the-counter drugs by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and hair by microscopy.  You will use your newly gained knowledge to investigate a variety of mock crime scenes.  Students will also learn how real investigators use science, creativity, and mathematical skills to solve a variety of crimes. Dr. Aaron Westrick – LSSU Criminal Justice Faculty; Dr. Judy Westrick - LSSU Chemistry Faculty; Dr. Nancy Kirkpatrick – LSSU Biology Faculty

Drama, Action, and Stage Make-up
Students are immersed into the physical aspect of drama; armed and unarmed stage combat, physical comedy, improvisation and the basics of stage make-up.  Throughout the day students participate in various activities to gain a working knowledge of the “action” in theatre and film.  These skills are valuable tools for students currently involved in theatre, or for those considering pursuing an interest in theatre and film.  No previous theatre experience necessary. Dan Choszczyk, Guest Artist

Dance
This class is for athletes, actors, or students who love to move and create! Students will learn the basic elements of ballet, modern, and jazz dance with a concentration in stretch and flexibility, Highland and Scottish Country Dance.  Students will apply dance techniques to improvisation exercises and choreography solo and group works.  A final showing of class will be presented at the end of the session.  This dance program is designed for students with minimal or no previous dance training. Deb Choszczyk, LSSU Fine Arts Faculty

Field Ecology and Geology
Combine your love of the outdoors and science through the study of geology and ecology.   Be a geoscientist by making observations, collecting data and interpreting active and ancient geologic processes in the beautiful natural settings of the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Ontario, Canada.  See an actual lava flow and interpret the geologic events that shaped our region.  You will explore river, shoreline, waterfall and dune processes at Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point.  Be an aquatic ecologist:  experience fish capture and identification, aquatic insect analysis, stream quality assessment, and more.  You’ll also learn how GIS and other computer applications apply to ecology and geology. Dr. Paul Kelso, LSSU Science Faculty; Dr. Ashley Moerke, Biology Faculty; Dr. Geoff Steinhart, LSSU Biology Faculty; Dr. David Szlag, LSSU Environmental Science Faculty

Exploring Biological Science: Hands-on Opportunities for Students Interested in Biology and Health
You will learn about opportunities in the health field with hands on laboratory experiences.  Labs will include dissections and work with human skeletons and models in the anatomy lab, BioPac physiology experiments, EKG and respiration in the physiology lab, and DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis in the genetics lab. Dr. Nancy Kirkpatrick, LSSU Biology Faculty; Dr.  Barb Evans, LSSU Biology Faculty; Britton Ranson Olson, LSSU Biology Faculty

Video Game Design
Explore the world of video games as you design and tweak your own video game. You will explore the process of game creation from initial idea to final concept. You will take home your completed project as well as code for several games developed at Lake Superior State University. Dr. Schemm, LSSU Math and Science Faculty

Wealth of Nations: Global Business
An economics and global business camp that will explore how countries become wealthy. Using a hands-on, investigative approach, campers will explore key economic indicators, environmental factors, and international cultures to learn to assess the U.S.A.'s economics wealth and the economic wealth of countries around our world. Brian Zinser, LSSU School of Business Faculty
