The Soo is a “Cool City”...

Sault Ste. Marie earns “Cool Cities” designation.

The Sault’s effort to restore the Soo Theatre on Ashmun Street has earned recognition from Governor Jennifer Granholm.

“Bring Back the Lights!” is a core of volunteers working to restore the building for community use. The group has gained status as a charity for the purpose of accepting donations in support of the project.

The major premise of “Cool Cities” is that cities that appeal to members of the “creative class” are cities that offer cultural attractions, entertainment, and lots of job opportunities. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Cool Cities campaign is intended to create awareness of Michigan ’s core cities by promoting Michigan ’s urban areas and regions as cool location for business and living. This initiative builds on the foundation that we’ve laid through our college recruitment campaign, the Michigan Recruitment Alliance, and enables the MEDC to make the nation aware of Michigan ’s cool cities.
