SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University’s School of Business, Entrepreneurial and Legal Studies has presented its distinguished alumnus award to John Bosbous, treasurer of Bucyrus International Corporation of Milwaukee, Wisc. The award recognizes Bosbous’ work ethic and his leadership in civic and corporate endeavors.

He received the honor during the school’s annual recognition dinner at the Sault Country Club on April 25.

Bosbous received a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with an emphasis in accounting, in 1975 from what was then Lake Superior State College. He is a charter member of LSSU's Lambda Sigma Beta business fraternity.

Coming from a family with 10 siblings, he put himself through college by working as fudge maker at downtown Sault Ste. Marie's Fudge du Lock.

Bosbous also competed in varsity basketball and track, receiving the 1973-74 Ronald "Bud" Cooper Coaches Award for sportsmanship.

"John Bosbous proves the value of college athletics," said Prof. Madan Saluja during an introduction of his former student. "Competing on the court as well in the classroom makes for a better student and successful business executive."

Bosbous started his professional career in the accounting and treasury departments of Republic Steel at its headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. He joined Bucyrus International as an assistant to the treasurer in 1984, advanced to assistant treasurer in 1988, and was promoted to treasurer in 1998, a position he still serves in today.

Bucyrus International, one of only two mining equipment manufacturers in the world, is a $2.4-billion company with more than 6,000 employees. Bosbous' responsibilities include cash management, banking relationship management, accounts receivable, risk management/insurance, pension and savings plan administration, contract administration, export financing, letters of credit, real estate administration, environmental health, safety and security and fleet management. He has also serves on the Bucyrus International benefits planning committee.

Bosbous lives in Elm Grove, Wisc., with his college sweetheart and wife of 33 years, Patricia Momot, who also graduated from LSSU in 1975. The couple has two sons. Mark, a graduate of Notre Dame, is in the fourth year of a plastic-surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Michael is a junior at the University of Michigan.

Outside of professional commitments, Bosbous has been finance chair since 2002 of the Easter Seals Kindcare of Southeast Wisconsin, a $4 million non-profit organization. Between 2002 and 2005, he co-chaired the medical student parent association of the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has also served on the finance committee of his church, St. Mary's Visitation Parish. Bosbous coaches and assists youth sports.

In accepting his award, Bosbous credited his former professor and mentor, Madan Saluja, who has himself become an institution during a 40-year-plus tenure at Lake Superior State.

"Today, I realize that it takes a special person to be more than just intelligent, but one who captivates people to make a lasting impression," he said. "By caring about the student and demanding the best, Dr. Saluja has inspired me professionally and personally with a solid education and career."
