SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University welcomes back alumni and friends for a reunion-themed celebration of the 20th annual staging of the Lake State Golf Classic, June 13-15, at the Otsego Club-Resort in Gaylord.

The event always offers more than golf, and this year is no exception. Those who attend will enjoy a social on Sunday night and a banquet after the tournament on Monday. A live and silent auction during the social will see some unique items presented, including Detroit Red Wings autographed items and tickets, art work, Team Penske Indy Car replica models, Laker apparel, golf packages and more. A list of the available items is located here.

Over the history of the Classic, approximately $347,000 has been raised for scholarships and projects at the university. LSSU supporters such as Sault Ste. Marie’s Shane Woolever DO of Greater Peninsula Orthopedics, the event’s title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year, have helped build the event to what it is today.

"In recent years we’ve had successful team-oriented reunions,” said Tom Coates, acting executive director of the LSSU Foundation. "This being the 20th year, we want to broaden the scope and welcome Laker alumni and friends from all eras and programs to enjoy the reunion atmosphere. It's a weekend of fun regardless of your skill-level as a golfer."

The funds raised from this year's event are earmarked for the Laker Club Endowment which provides scholarship and operational support to the Laker athletic program.

"Dr. Woolever’s leadership role as the title sponsor of this event has been outstanding," Coates said. "The participation of our donors and sponsors help us meet the challenges of funding athletics at Lake State."

Woolever started Greater Peninsula Orthopedics in 2001 and is an orthopedic surgeon at War Memorial Hospital. He has also provided specialized care for Laker student-athletes. For being a strong advocate of the University, Woolever was awarded the Donald and Catherine Finlayson Distinguished Citizen award in October 2008 by the LSSU Alumni Association.

The three-day Classic will start on Saturday with a variety of courses open for practice rounds. The Classic Saturday Social, sponsored by Central Savings Bank, will be held from 7-11 p.m. in the Otsego Club Resort's Logmark.

Practice rounds continue on Sunday before the Classic Bash/Social, sponsored by the Chippewa County War Memorial Hospital, from 7-10 p.m. in the Otsego Club's Special Events Center. The social will feature a brief program followed by the live auction.

"Our planning committee and staff did an excellent job on tracking down the auction items from the many friends and business supporters of LSSU," Coates said. "We have everything from a commissioned painting of the campus, a Disney vacation, golf packages in Frankenmuth and autographed hockey sticks, with the entire proceeds going to support Laker Athletics."

The Classic Scramble, the main event, begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Monday. It is not too late for teams of four to get in on the action or place a bid in the auction. Contact Coates or the LSSU Foundation at 906-635-2725, or by e-mailing here or here. The Classic website, under events on the LSSU Foundation web pages, provides information on sponsorship opportunities and the option to submit your event registration online.
