COOPER CLASSIC LAURELS – Lake Superior State University legacies Ron Mason, Bud Cooper, and Terry McDermott (left to right) are all smiles after a day of golf on Sept. 12 that benefited Laker athletics in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Retired LSSU student-athlete, coach, and athletic director Bud Cooper has raised more than a quarter-million dollars for Laker athletic programs since starting his namesake tournament at the Sault Country Club more than 20 years ago. Proceeds go to sports that are not fully funded, such as track, tennis, softball, and cross-country. Special guests Mason and McDermott joined this year's coterie of 90 golfers. Mason started his coaching career at LSSC in 1966, eventually going on to coach Michigan State Spartan hockey for 23 seasons. He retired this past spring as MSU's athletic director. Terry McDermott was a student at Lake State when he won a gold medal in 500-meter speed skating at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. McDermott's Olympic career consisted exclusively of 500-meter events at the Olympic Winter Games of 1960, 1964, and 1968. He was inducted in the National Speed Skating Hall of Fame on June 4, 1977.
