SLOPPY KISSER(S) – Teresa Makela of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., lines up to give Cee My Sonny Zip (Sonny) a good luck kiss before they head to a show in Escanaba. They qualified for multiple classes during the annual Upper Peninsula Championship Show on Sept. 27. To qualify, a horse and rider must place in the top three at any qualified event in the Upper Peninsula. The good luck kiss worked; Sonny took home three firsts, two seconds, and a fourth. THE LONGEST REACH – Lake Superior State University student Robert Morgan ekes out an extra centimeter on his crawl to the top during a recreation studies climbing class south of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Professor Sally Childs, left, and another student steady — belay — safety lines from below. Morgan is a junior in fisheries and wildlife management from Fairview, Mich. BIG MAC BITE – Lake Superior State University student Stewart Benson takes a bit out of a macintosh apple during "Applefest" in the Cisler Center Galley. LSSU food services had a table of fresh apples donated by the Michigan Apple Association., along with apple cider and grilled apple panini sandwiches. Benson is a junior from Goodrich, Mich., majoring in political science. (LSSU/Lance Boehmer)

JUGGLING HIS EXPENSES – Lake Superior State University student Brian Pisaneschi wanted to see what a tuition overage check looked like in real terms. So he cashed the $2,000 check into 50-dollar bills before living expenses gobbled it all up. Rather appropriately, Pisaneschi is a junior in business administration/management from Pinckney, Mich. FREE FLIGHT – Kadence Gorsuch, a preschooler enrolled at Lake Superior State University's Child Care Center, launches a fistful of maple leaves into orbit during morning stroll with her class. Center staffers and student interns bundle up the kids almost daily for hour-long walks around campus. From a practical standpoint, the kids burn off energy. For kids, anything that involves colorful Fall leaves is the stuff of dreams and childhood memories. (LSSU/Sarah Kester)

HEAPING HELPING – Lake Superior State University student Kyle Pobur just couldn't wait to conclude his transaction with the LSSU chapter of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE). The group convenes every other Thursday in the Shouldice Library's west lobby to sell fresh-grilled sausages imported from the Sault, Ont., meat store, Pinos. E-mail SIFE at amandaavery@lssusife.org for a schedule of sale dates through December. (LSSU/Zhengling Wang)

DRESSED IN LAYERS – Kesley Plath, a preschooler enrolled at Lake Superior State University's Child Care Center, literally looses herself in Fall during a morning walk with her class on campus. Staff and practicum students take kids for walks almost every day if it is not raining. Now that it's getting colder, expeditions are taking short cuts through Crawford Hall of Science to look at rock and animal displays. (LSSU/Sarah Kester)
