SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. – Lake Superior State University students are invited to compete in LSSU Recreation Club's third-annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, held in the Norris Center Pool, 4-6 pm, on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Teams consisting of engineering novices and experts alike will build their boats using only cardboard and duct tape. One team member will maneuver the boat to see who can successfully cross the pool first. T-shirts and prizes will be awarded to the fastest teams crossing the pool.
Not every boat makes it to the other side, according to Katelynn O'Boyle, Cardboard Boat Regatta Chair, "the funniest part of the day is watching all the sinkers."
Registration for the event is free, and forms are available at the Parks and Recreation office located in the Norris Center. Teams should show up with their registration at 4 pm in the SAC to begin building their boats. The racing portion of the event is scheduled to take place in the Norris Center pool at 5 pm.
The event is one of several that the LSSU Rec Club sponsors throughout the year. Some other events that the Rec Club is involved with this year include the recent Camp-A-Thon, volunteer work at the Brimley Harvest Festival, the upcoming Pathfinders program, and the Disk Golf Course.
O'Boyle also mentioned that there will be a number of other events the Rec Club will host or be involved with in the upcoming months.
