SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Area residents are invited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day a couple days late this year with a tour of Eastern Upper Peninsula farms beginning at noon on April 24.
Earth Day 2010 is celebrated on Thursday, April 22, but a committee of Lake Superior State University employees and community members are extending the celebration through the weekend.
The farms tour will present four Eastern UP farms that produce a variety of local foods and goods. Featured food producers include the Circle K Bison Ranch, RMG Family Sugarbush, Eric Wallis Sheep Farm and Lake Superior Woolen Company, all of Rudyard, as well as the Oasis Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie. The tour will be followed by an optional gourmet dinner featuring local foods at Karl’s Cuisine in the Sault.
"We thought this would be a good way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day here," said Sherry Duesing, LSSU mathematics professor and part of the Earth Day 2010 committee. "We organized this tour to showcase a few of the wonderful foods and farm products available here in the Eastern UP."
The tour will leave the LSSU campus by bus at 11:45 a.m. on April 24 and return between 5-5:30 p.m. The cost is only $5 per person. A limited number of tickets, $22 each, will also be sold for the local foods gourmet dinner. Tickets are limited and must be purchased prior to the day of the event.
