National Book Award winner spotlights creative writing at LSSU

SHARING HER CRAFT – A 2010 National Book Award winner for her novel Lord of Misrule, Jaimy Gordon, talks shop with Lake Superior State University creative writing students on Feb. 20 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Gordon spoke to the class about various aspects of the writing process. Her visit to LSSU culminated with an evening reading of her work and a reception that kicked off Lake State's Visiting Writers Series, set to bring highly acclaimed literary authors and poets to the campus. Newly hired English professor and novelist Janice Repka coordinated the visit. The students listening to Gordon's talk are, from left, Jessica Stutz, a sophomore in elementary education from Mackinaw City, Mich.; Elizabeth Langton, a junior in secondary education, English language literature from Maybee Mich.; Elise Beaudoin, a senior in secondary education, English language literature from Sault Ste. A WRITER'S NIRVANA – A capacity crowd in Lake Superior State University's Crow's Nest listens to Jaimy Gordon, winner of the 2010 National Book Award, discuss her novel Lord of Misrule on Feb 20 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Gordon was inaugural speaker for Lake Superior State University's new Visiting Writer Series, which brings highly acclaimed literary authors and poets to the campus to raise awareness of LSSU's expanding creative writing program and to serve as an outreach for the community. LSSU offers both an undergraduate major and a minor in creative writing that encourages innovation and experimentation as students develop their voices. Students complete coursework in prose, poetry, and performance writing, and are given opportunities to get publishing experience before graduation.
